Help with these 'prongs'

For Anime North my costume will be The Iris Swordsoul will be making a sword to go as my prop. I'm currently having trouble with the 'prong' or horn/curved shaped part near the handle. I was thinking foam clay for this, and used aluminum foil for my base then taped down then tried adding the foam clay on top. Not sure if this is odd or not but this was based off of Arda's tutorials of making hollow horns and making light horns with foam clay and just applied the idea since that's the closest thing I could find but I was having trouble.

Do I continue with the foam clay idea and keep refining or is there a better idea? My main material is foamboard for the blade, wooden dowel for support/handle and using a lotion bottle lid to connect the blade to handle (the shape matched the part that connects the two parts.)

Additionally I do have 5mm amd 2mm eva foam and insulation foam since I was able to make the details pieces for a previous costume with it. The 5mm is running low though since I predominately used it for the hat she wears.

Any help is appreciated, tia!

Personally, I would just layer some eva foam and sculpt that, then contact cement it to the main handle. While foam clay is nice, I hate having to wait for it to dry.

What exactly is the trouble you are having with the foam clay?

@Slapthefatcat:

The 5mm one, right? Hopefully I can make it work with the little amount I have left...I'm layering 2 pieces on top, right?

@directoryfury:

Trying to keep the clay nice and smooth when applying on top of my base but maybe I'm not handling the material right. I used some tools to help smooth it out and tried with my hands but still got lumps.

If you have a Dremel you can actually sand foam clay once its dry to smooth it out! You might should be able to do it with normal sand paper if you use a fine enough grit. Also to help smooth it while it still wet you can use some water on you hands, just like using normal clay.

Yes, I have one luckily :). And I've heard that you can sand foam clay down, but whenever I work with clay (not just the foam one) I need to be able to smooth the clay while it's fresh so I'm only sanding down minimal bumps. But I'll try the water idea to smooth it down more; thank you both!
