Does anyone remember the old Cosplay.com?

I joined the cosplay.com community back in 2003 (my old username was huggableshinobi) and I'm just wondering if anyone else was part of it back in the day?

OMG finally! It's great that the site will be finished soon.

@RydiaValentine - me too. The current site version was a stopgap version just to get over to the new back end, with the goal of having the full site ready by early August. While a month or two behind, this new upcoming version is the full deal and designed to be a place to hang out, vs a place to just dump photos every once in a while.

One thing I should bring up early is that I'm aware of people asking about whether we have forums coming back - in the new version there aren't really "forums" per se, but rather channels like "General Cosplay" or "Wigs" that are similar to the old major categories. You can jump into a category and flip between real-time chat, posting questions in a forum-ish format, journal entries, and more. At that point it covers most of what a forum would do, so having another dedicated forum area would just add confusion.

As a sneak peak, we will eventually be opening up the ability for users to create their own channels, both public and private, so that you can essentially create usergroups on the site.

On the uploading front, while I do like the flow of the front page stream, I came to the conclusion that the current way the experience is set up doesn't really give any incentive to fill out profiles (which are also greatly expanded). The current method was built assuming (wrongly) that users would stop by and upload a couple of images every day, but joining the site should really be about spending your free time adding your current costumes and uploading all of your photos in a sitting or two. We will then have a way to push your work into the main discovery feed from there, as well as finally getting the chronological following feeds up and running.

One other major fix is that our series and character data is presented in the wrong direction, so we're flipping that and also bringing back character search. So now you'll be able to just search for a character name from any page on the site and be presented with a list of costumes to view.

So the end result is moving more into a real-time collaboration platform and a place to hang out with each other outside of the public eye, while still retaining the profile-based format so that you can showcase your work.

There will be an onboarding process for current users so that you can do things like update your username, turn on/off messaging, other settings, etc.

I should add something about the marketplace - it is coming back, but in a basic format at first. At the start you'll be able to flag full costumes in your dashboard as "for sale" and add some extra info, and they'll be aggregated into a for sale section.

Once we gauge the activity from that and are sure nobody is causing any issues, we'll start bringing back things like listing used individual pieces for sale like before.

I think this site needs other social media boost. Get a discord set up, and promote featured cosplays in ig and twitter

I second a coscom discord server. It would be especially great to have one at the moment while we wait for the site updates. :)

For Discord, we've been asked in the past about having one but the new update takes care of that already, as it's integrated into a real time Discord-style chat system in-house. Otherwise we'd be splitting our user activity onto other services, which would defeat the purpose of having a website. :)

Our system also allows for users to create their own channels, both public and private, which is further integrated into an upcoming usergroups feature.

@miyavihoney we do have some things planned like that re: social promotion once we're live

Been here since forever, but didn't visit for like a decade+. Thought I'd hop over to see what other folks have posted for ffxiv cosplays and see what new techniques were posted in the forums, only to learn that apparently everything has been nuked???

No search feature for cosplays? A forum that doesn't seem all that useful as such? What is this madness!

Is there at least some archived version of the site from back when it had content worth visiting for?

I've been here for, what, 15 years? Maybe longer? Not sure when I actually made a profile, but it's been a while. Can't wait for the forums to come back, it was always fun to trawl the construction help section for new posts and see if there was anything I could help with, or post myself if there was something I needed help on. Other social media just doesn't cut it when it comes to looking up the rather specific construction techniques we all end up needing. I've been here long enough to know that while stuff definitely does get outdated eventually (this hobby has come a long, long, way!) more long-term posts that can be looked up for years to come are so much easier to find and make use of on an actual forum rather than, e.g, Instagram, where it's impossible to find anything that isn't in the form of a 30 second video tutorial and good luck sorting through any saved posts. I'm rambling, but man do I miss forums or anything similar. Can't wait for this site to become fully functional again!

Yeah other social media sites don't compare to what this site used to be.

I can't find or access my old friends profiles anymore and when we reminisce about our cosplay memories, now we can't access them anymore. It's so frustrating and sad and i really hope we get the old site back soon! It's unusable right now!

@Mudou - The site's gonna be like this for a while I take it. Maybe in a year or two we'll finally get a decent site, maybe not. Til then best thing you can do is reach out to the admins here.

@Mudou - in case you didn't see the reply to your other post, if you can't find something you can email support @ cosplay and we'll help out. :)

@Angelx624 - I hear you and understand the frustration. We have a massively expanded site with tons of new and returning features ready to go. It's literally a brand new experience combining the old, fun "hang out" functionality, search, chat, messaging etc combined with some some modern tools for everyone to utilize.

Unfortunately right now we're in the slow 5-6 weeks part of the year where user activity historically plummets, and since the new version is going to include increasing server capacity for real-time features (and increasing costs), we had to weigh that against launching it during the slowest time of the year.

In the meantime I'm always reachable at the support email for any questions/concerns. :)

That makes sense. I do check the site once a day. I do see some activity, though hopefully it picks up.
