Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Debuted in April 2010, at Anime Boston. I will have even better photos in a few weeks!!

Super Smash Brothers Brawl is one of my favorite, and most frequently played video games. Though Sheik is not my most often chosen fighter, she seemed to be the perfect cosplay for my body type and personality. I am also a huge fan of the Legend of Zelda series, and though Sheik was not featured in Twilight Princess, her updated character design made it into Brawl as the alter-ego of the new Princess Zelda.

Constructing the Costume:

Like many Anime and Video Game characters, Sheik’s clothing is elaborate, skin tight everywhere, and has no openings or fasteners to get in an out. So where to begin? I spent a lot of time thinking about how I would put together this outfit so that it would hug my curves and still come off of me without the aid of scissors. The reason this was such a challenge is that I could not find periwinkle lycra ANYWHERE. Or at least not in unitard form, which is what I originally preferred. It just wasn’t in season. So instead, I bought a pair of black leggings and made a periwinkle shirt out of stretch cotton. I only made the very top of the shirt, and the mid-section is actually a corset made from heavy home-decor fabric that you might use to upholster furniture. The corset laces in front, underneath the white poncho. The leg-armor is made from the same cotton jersey as the shirt, and is finished with rolled tulle.

The shoes, arm bands, and gauntlets were made from various knits, which yarn could be passed through to create the illusion of lacing. I made the small decorative fasteners out of sculpi, and painted the poncho with fabric paint. This costume involved a great deal of hand-stitching and detailing. It was super comfortable to wear and easy to walk like a boy in. Which was necessary because this is a very masculine–even androgynous–female character.

I wore this costume to Anime Boston 2010 with my boyfriend who was cosplaying as Ike from the same, Super Smash Brothers Brawl. We had some really nice photos taken of us that I will add to this page as soon as I get my hands on them. We plan on bringing these costumes to Connecticon 2010 after making a few alterations.
