Princess Garnet til Alexandros 17th

Final Fantasy IX

It’s such a pretty dress, I wanted a challenge and I adore FF9. With the lack of references, and conflicting designs, the dress was relatively open to my own interpretation. I mostly followed the fmv version, which doesn't have as much of a train, but decided to take the blue layer from the artwork. I chose to make a more practical version without a train, so it used less fabric, and is less hassle to wear etc. I love the detail, all the paintwork and beading, even if it was a pain to do.

The bodice was evil – strapless with a low back, so it took a lot of planning. It was really the main challenge for me. I feel I could now do much better, with concealing the boning and just generally constructing the dress better, but I'm still happy enough with it.

The painting wasn’t difficult, it was just really tedious and involved a lot of care. The leaves were painted free hand and every leaf has 3 colours on it – two shades of green and white highlights. The fleur de lis design round the bottom wasn’t so bad as I used a stencil. I beaded the outline of all the leaves, which took a stupid amount of time, but I like the effect.

My crown and jewellery (except the necklace) were bought from Lady Mana who originally had them commissioned. I could never have made anything as perfect as them, they’re fabulous! I did have to make the necklace, however, and I’m relatively happy with the crown I sculpted.
