Black cat is probably one of the more interesting spidey chicks out there. She is definitely one of my favorite characters.
THE SUIT-
The costume is very basic. I have a black jump/cat suit. You can either make it or go to your local dance supply store and buy one. On the collar of the suit there is white faux fur sewn. It is very easily hand sewn, and even easier if you have a machine.
THE CORSET-
On top of the suit I have a steel bone corset. Black cat has an awesome hourglass figure so I though the corset was necessary to get the affect. I personally liked the latched but since the corset is not part of her original costume it's really up to your own interpretation if you want to add one.
THE GLOVES-
the gloves are satin ball room gloves with faux fur sewn onto them. I like to reuse my accessories so the fur isn't actually sewn on. I made separate cuffs made out of folded over and glued down strips of the faux fur with elastic and just put them over the gloves.
THE BOOTS-
Again, since I like to reuse my accessories, I did the same cuff trick for the boots! (just different size for the cuffs of coarse.) It's a good idea to use either a fabric ruler or a string to measure around the width or the bulkiest part of the arm and leg (wherever you need the elastic to hold.)
THE COLLAR-
The Black Cat's collar is another thing open to interpretations. In her earlier versions she wears a spiked collar with no tag. I decided to use a spike-less leather collar (for the sake of adding the tag.) You can't seen in any of the pictures but I actually went to a Petco and got a tag beveled with the words "Spidy's Girl," just as a cute detail. Surprisingly it was noticed from time to time..but that goes to show that people appreciate the little details.
THE HAIR-
Her hair although always white or platinum blonde can be open to many interpretations. Typically her hair is long, but not always. I recommend using a wig. It almost always looks more professional. The wig can have or not have bangs and can be either wavy or straight. Personally I chose a long wavy wig with side angel bangs. (I thought it was more dynamic looking than a wig that was straight with no bangs. The curls also gave it some sexy volume.) Always wear a wig cap under your wig! It is much more comfortable and looks much better.
THE MASK-
In my oppinion the trickiest part of this costume to pull off is the mask. There is no cookie cutter stencil for her mask unfortunately, but fortunately it leaves it open. I designed the mask roughly around a version I saw in a comic with her and carnage. I chose it because I thought that particular version would be most complimentary for the shape of my face. I would suggest picking something you thought would look best on you, based roughly around any interpretation of her mask. I made the mask by cutting it out of a larger black string mask I got from a Halloween store.
THE FUTURE-
I'd like to make a Black Cat costume 2.0. Prefferably, this time, with a vinyl buckle up waist cincher, a vinyl cat suit, vinyl gloves, and more fur!
