DescriptionOne of my dream cosplays. I really love Shinku!
Dress: To make the dress I purchased four yards of cotton velvet and I have almost none left over. I can't over emphasize how much of a nightmare this fabric was to sew. Each and every seam had to be pinned within an inch of its life, sewn together by hand with a backstitch (with wax paper in between the layers) and then machine sewed over top of all that. And despite all that, there was still slippage, a lot of the seams had to be done more than once. Velvet also frays quite easily so every edge had to be serged, sometimes more than once.
The bodice pattern was drafted by me from a basic body block pattern. The bodice is lined with bemberg lining. The skirt is three meters gathered into the bodice and the ruffle on the bottom of the skirt is seven gathered meters. So... yes, I hand stitched a seven meter hem. The black lace near the neck is a pre-gathered scalloped edge lace. And for the collar I used a mandarin collar. I also drafted the sleeves and collar patterns. The ruffles at the cuff are gathered with elastic. The dress closes with a back zipper. The back bow is detachable and hooks onto the dress at centerback.
Undergarments: The crinoline is made out of tulle, and of a very simple design, but it creates the bell shape I wanted. The petticoat is about three meters of cotton fabric pleated onto a twill tape waistband. Also pretty simple. Finished both of these in a day. I am also wearing the dress over the corset I made to go with my Princess Aurora cosplay. I feel it really improves the overall silhouette. I will also most likely wear the dress with the bloomers I made to go with my Ciel cosplay.
Capelet: Wool lined with broadcloth. Made in a circle shape with a mandarin style collar. The buttonholes were made with my sewing machine.
Hat: Made from a pattern that I borrowed from a friend. This was one of the most annoying parts of the costume, and in pretty unexpected ways.
Accessories: The cane is a bamboo cane that I found at a costume shop. I painted it pink with acrylic paint and sprayed it with sealer. The shoes were a lucky find (and a great sale!) and the roses were shoes clips that I found at a jewelry store.
Wig: I ordered the wig from Arda wigs. It arrived very quickly and is really lovely. I just had to trim the bangs as far as styling goes.
