The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Drrrrrreeeaaaam costume! This costume took a lot of time to make, and I have a lot of feelings about this game and costume, so this is going to be a loooooong description, m’kay? :P

This was going to be my second costume ever, Ocarina of Time was my first Zelda game, and still one of my favorites. The day I was drafting patterns for the pauldrons, Nintendo Power unveiled the designs for TP Zelda… and this was put on the back burner. I’d been meaning to get back to it, and it wasn’t until some of my friends were talking about getting a small Ocarina of Time group together for A-Kon 24 that I decided to come back to it. I seriously underestimated the amount of time it would take (I thought I could do it in three months, ha!). In the end it took me about a year and a half (with some breaks) to get this costume together.

The dress is a 3/4 circle skirt attached to the bodice from a Burda dress pattern, the neckline of which I modified for accuracy. The bias tape around the collar was made from the same fabric as the top. The bodice is a pattern I created on my dress form. I really wanted to do these in the toned down purple color palate seen in Hyrule Historia, the 3DS version of the game (the top is pretty purple in the N64 version too), etc, but oddly enough I couldn’t find any good fabrics in those colors.

The belt pieces were cast in resin, then super glued to a Sintra backing which I heat formed to fit my waist. The center pieces that hang down were sculpted from Magic Sculpt. The rest of the belt is vinyl that was sewn into a strip, and attaches to the front piece with Velcro.

The tabard decorations are a mixture of appliqués, embroidery (machine and hand). The royal crest was made by gradient dying some cotton, and my friend Yuki used her embroidery machine to make the appliqué for me. The Triforce and a couple of other small pieces were made into appliqués by her too. Everything else was done by hand. I lost track of how many hours it took. @[email protected] This was my first hand embroidery project, and I really enjoyed it. I’m actually quite eager to do it again. Many thanks to my friend Riicreations for vectoring the designs for me.

The chest piece is a combination of craft foam and Worbla. My friend Oritzer vectored a clear image of the Hylian crest. I traced it onto the Worbla, and used a hot knife to cut the royal crest out of a single layer, and then layered that on top of another piece. I smoothed out the Worbla using Coregeek’s guide, but left the crest untouched for contrast.

The pauldrons were my second attempt at them, and sort of a last minute thing again. I didn’t have as much free time as I anticipated between A-Kon and AFest, so they’re going to need to me remade. The patterns were cut from Sintra and heat formed. The designs were cut from craft foam since I was pressed for time and couldn’t sculpt them, but I’m pretty pleased with how they turned out. I didn’t have time to rig them to my shoulders and chest piece the way I wanted to either, so they didn’t always sit the way I wanted to, and my chest piece would sometimes droop.

I was able to make a gem I like better for my tiara, so I’ll be redoing that as well. I cut my base for it out of Worbla, heat formed it to my face cast for a perfect fit, then sculpted on top of that with Fix-It Sculpt.

The wig is an Arwen in 115 Pale Blonde. I ventilated some extra fibers into the hair line, straightened it, and cut around a foot of fiber off. My good friend ThornQueen was kind enough to take time out of her busy schedule and straighten up the ends while I was wearing it.

I cast the ears myself because I wasn’t too crazy about the way some of the readily available ones looked on me. I need to figure out how to get them and the wig to play nicely together, they’re not supposed to droop that low. >__>

The earrings were not made by me, but rather by my friend Korov of Korov Creations. She printed them for me on her super fancy pants 3D printer, and they’re AMAAAAZING. 8D

This costume wouldn't have been what it is now without the help of my friends. Thanks to each and everyone of you who helped through to the end. <3
