Toph Bei Fong

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Toph has always been my favorite character from A:tLA. She's very cocky and brash and doesn't take crap from anyone. Her personality, along with her design, drew me like a moth to a flame lol. This cosplay has been in the works for about a year. The green undershirt and pants were originally made from broadcloth that matched colors perfectly. However, I was unsatisfied with how it draped and photographed, so I chose to remake them using a linen blend that was a slightly different shade of green. The result draped much better and just looked better overall.
The yellow overrobe was made using Kona cotton. I'm not entirely happy with the end result and may end up remaking it in the future, but for now, it's good enough. I used the same pattern that I made the top from, with heavy modifications. It is fully lined, so it tends to get hot.
The wrist and ankle bands were made using bias tape and scraps left from making the top. By far the easiest part of the costume to make.
The belt provided quite a few challenges I hadn't expected. I originally planned to sandwich thick, double-sided fusible interfacing between two layers of fabric and slipstitch the edges together. I ended up not giving myself enough seam allowence when I cut out the material and had to chuck the whole thing. In the end, I interfaced two strips of fabric, sewed them together, and used that instead. The result isn't as sturdy as I'd like, but it looks good. For the embellishments, I painted some buttons antique gold and hand sewed them on-extremely tedious.
