Critique on my Medieval version of Casey Jones (TMNT)?

This thread is archived.

  • Hi everyone!

So for my first post, I wanted to get some critique on my very first costume, which I'm going to be using mainly for LARPing. I took one of my favorite characters of all time (Other than Megaman.EXE), Casey Jones, and decided to give him a medieval revamp!

This image is my reference image from the 2013 TV show Back to the Sewers:

and THIS image is of how I think Casey would look if he was a medieval warrior of some sort!!

I made the armor out of cardboard boxes, and each piece has a velcro piece somewhere on it that attaches to its counterpart on a pair of sweatpants and a long sleeve shirt I have. I'm still working on gathering the parts to make a weapon for him (I was thinking maybe a scythe and a mace of some sort? That would translate into a baseball bat and a hockey stick I think) Which I'll probably do from PVC and more cardboard.

So what do you think? Any tips on how I could strengthen the cardboard WITHOUT using any sort of toxic material? Thank you for your input!

PS: Not entirely sure if the images will work. I have no clue how to insert actual images without needing a HTML link. :-/

  • Your second image does not work because of permission settings. Right click on the photo and 'copy image address'. That's how you get the HTML link.

  • ah, okay! Thank you very much.

There! That should be better. :)

  • Sooooo.....Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, comments on what I could do better with? I prefer to work with Cardboard just because its the easiest material to obtain (I work in a supermarket and have permission to take whatever empty cardboard boxes I want) but I think there's definitely something that I could improve upon with my designs...

  • Bumping this thread to see if anyone has any opinions they want to share. :)

  • Maybe you should post pictures when you are further into the progress? Because what you have posted so far looks like all you have done is roughly cutting out cartboard and painting it in a very random and incomplete manner, which does not resemble the way the armor from your reference picture is colored. Maybe explaining your "medival revamp" idea a bit more?

Other than that you should look into all sorts of primers available, because in its current state it just looks like raw cardboard with a bit of spraypaint on it. And this raw cardboard look could kill the medival theme alltogether.

  • another way you can go is using TMNT 3 movie from the 90s where the turtles timetravel
    to fudal japan,
and have casey in a hockey armour samurai hybrid using a hockey stick instead of a sword

not sure if you did, but id post in the armour section asking about making
basic medievil plate using cardboard, and try a search for cardboard base papermache methods
