Black Star Cosplay Assistance

This thread is archived.

  • Hello everyone my wife and I cosplayed as Black Star and Tsubaki last year in our first cosplay at Otakon. We are doing it again this year since it's the anniversary of Soul Eater, again at Otakon. We are looking to step up our cosplays a bit more this year my wife is actually making her dress from scratch and I'm attempting to improve on my outfit as well. The two areas I'm trying to improve on are the collar on Black Star's Shirt as well as the large pieces on his gloves. I have a men's active wear sleeveless shirt that I need to attach the stand up collar to. I am not adept at sewing by hand, I can use a sewing machine for the most part though. I also have fingerless work out gloves I used last year but didn't have the large parts that ran up his arms I'm looking for a way to create those I do have EVA foam which I was leaning toward using. But I would love any input from any fellow cosplayers.

  • EVA foam will get a bit sweaty, but its the first viable thought i had aswell
    (pvc pipe would be obnoxious)

since its cylindrical what you wana do is make a normal conical band
then compensate the shape to make it a cylinder by adding sectional layers
once the base is made cylinder, judge wether to add another piece of large EVA
over it, or use craft foam to keep it thinner
then to clean it up, use craft foam on the ends

for the collar youll need interfacing of some sort
hopefully someone else can chime it on how to for that

  • EVA foam would work, but 1" upholstery foam covered in fabric matching the gloves would be better. For the collar you essentially want to make a cone from fabric. Fabric that matches the shirt and either super stiff interfacing or 1/2" upholstery foam sandwiched inside 2 layers (outter and lining) would work perfectly. You might be able to find a tutorial based around the akatsuki coat.
