I would sew them by hand, if realism is what you're going for. It's very simple to do anyways. Probably faster than painting.

What type of thread or cord would you use?

You could do a few strands of sewing thread to make it thicker, or get buttonhole thread, or perle cotton, or even yarn. Look around and see if theres something with the thickness that you like.

Leather beading cord, something like this. If you can estimate how much you need, you can obviously get a smaller quantity than 100 yards.
