Hello everyone :),

I'm prepping myself to cosplay as my favorite character - Nico from LL for future cons/events. This is going to be my first time doing a cosplay/crossplay. I thought to myself that if I'm going to do this, I should do it right. That's why I'm here to seek for advice from you guys - people that are experienced in cosplaying/crossplaying.

I'm not good at sewing/making my own cosplay, so I decided just to buy a set from online retailers.

This is where my dilemma starts - I'm having trouble in deciding a costume.

I'm posting this in the crossplay section for obvious reasons, I'm not a girl.

This limits me which costume I can go with that won't break too much of the illusion (or at least what I think).

I'm about 5'9"-5'10", 155~lbs.

I have several concerns that I've been thinking:

->Height - Nico is a petite/short character (154cm), being already 5"10" (177~cm), should I worry about shoes that have any sort of heels? Or I'm still in that "passable" range if I go with shoes that has minimum heels (like the one the model is wearing in the maid costume).

->Shoulder width - I've read about mtf crossplayers should pick outfits that conceals male's body outlines. I normally wear a 38R suit, which measures my shoulder width around 18", which means I should pick outfits that does not show the "naked" shoulders, is this right?

->Chests/Boobs - Nico has flat chests, should I still create some curves?

->Legs - I do have a moderate amount of bodyhair mainly on legs and arms, would I be able to get away with only shaving my thighs and wear some opaque thigh high stockings to conceal the rest of the legs? (This sounds stupid, even to myself. If I can shave my thighs, why not just shave the rest of the legs too. But I'll just leave this here for you guys to discuss).

->Arms - I'm not a super muscular guy, but I do have some muscle lines, it would be very obvious if I wear outfits that are sleeveless.

I've selected several outfits on aliexpress (in the order of what I think may work -> less likely will work), and hopefully you guys can give me some insights on which set I should go with and/or which one is your favorite! Other costume suggestions that's not on the list are welcome as well!

Cheers :)

Hi there! I'm a cis girl, also a LL cosplayer (Nico soon, in fact!) so I'm happy to give you tips!

Personally, I stay away from heels for short characters, even though I'm 5'2, just to be as small and cute as possible. Also, since you probably have slightly larger feet as a male, heels may be uncomfortable, especially all day at a con.

You are correct about the shoulders! It is generally more flattering to wear something with sleeves, especially for a first time cosplaying.

Nico has a body type we call "rectangle", so I don't think you need to create curves. Its not just her chest, her figure as a whole is very aligned with itself. No hourglass needed. :-)

As for legs, I would suggest shaving or waxing all the way, (maybe even your arms) because it will look better (hair pokes through tights, unless they are very thick material)... and, let me tell you, it is so fun to have silky smooth legs! (And it's not unmanly. I mean, look at all the male models and superheros etc who lack body hair.) HOWEVER - its your hair, and your choice. Don't feel pressured to get rid of it unless YOU want to.

As for arms, muscles are no problem unless you're Dwayne The Rock Johnson. Heck, even then, I think The Rock could do a pretty sweet "Nico-Nico-Nii". I have seen plenty of School Idol cosplayers, male AND female, with muscle, and it was cute! Strong idols. :D

Choose whatever cosplay you love most. But if you want another opinion, I think the Pink Dress or Snow Halation would be a great start for a first cosplay. And hey, I'm doing Snow Halation too... Nico twins!!

In the end, cosplay is all about FUN! Do what makes YOU happy, comfortable, and feeling like an idol.

^ Lots of great advice from cinnamuffin. :)

I disagree a little on the "creating curves" though-- if you're really trying to pass, at least consider doing a little bit (particularly the bust area), even if it's really small. You definitely don't need to go crazy, but that little bit will noticeably improve the silhouette, and you'll notice it in a lot of poses. But yeah, no crazy hourglasses required!

Seconding Snow Halation as well-- it's super recognizable, and also adorable. The uniform is also nice becauce it'll be immediately pegged as Love Live with that skirt.

Happy cosplaying!

Thank you guys for the tips :):)

Oh, fair point! I agree.
Also looking back, though she's really tiny in the anime, in official art she does have a little more girly shape. :D

It also really depends on how convincing you're trying to be (which considering that you sounded willing to shave all your leg hair, pretty dedicated). Even "flat-chested" girls still have something happening there, and combining a completely flat chest with the other general features of a man's body (eg broad shoulders, more triangular shape) is just less likely to pass.

We're definitely not talking double-D falsies here, just a little something!

Speaking from personal experience, getting something to take your waist in even just a little will help a lot with passability.

I saw a guy crossplaying Nico at Anime Expo a couple weeks ago and I thought the costume was really good and funny. It was her disguise from the first episode, with the sunglasses, mask, scarf, and jacket. I think it's funny because, with the hair, it's still obvious who she is.

I found a photo here:

How did I miss this o_o

I was looking for Nicos to take picture with in order to add them to my "collection" :p, I only found about 15~

But yeah, I thought about doing this at first, then I decided I might as well do some makeup as well if I'm crossplaying.
