Important: Site Update is Coming

Archived Thread
Our site is currently being changed over to the new version. Everything you see is currently in read-only mode. Additionally, the layout and UI will not be complete until all sections have been re-enabled, so please ignore any layout issues (or bland-ness) at this time.

The site update is scheduled to begin late Tuesday (Nov 6) and will likely be in full "changeover" mode on Thursday morning.

It is important to note that the update will cause around one day of downtime while the new servers are spun up and the DNS propagates, and the site will then be set to read-only mode for a few days after that while I tweak a bunch of things in the background and finish importing some old data. Because of this, logging in will be disabled at first, so please save anything that you absolutely can't miss during that 3-4 day period (e.g. any private messages that are important).

Once everything looks to be running smoothly, I will open up login access again for our users, but a few things will still be disabled for a couple of days, like adding/editing costumes and photos. This is because I need to shift all of my attention to any user login issues over the first day or two. The new forums will be live though.

And then once that's all ironed out, the rest of the site will open up and you'll be able to work on things again. The new site has a nicely organized dashboard containing all of your costumes, photos and albums in one place.

The final piece of the first update will be re-opening new user registrations, which I anticipate happening around November 15.

I apologize for waiting until the end of the month to do this, but the Halloween season is our busiest season traffic-wise and I didn't want to risk any extended downtime during that period. Now that it's about over, we can start moving forward on everything.

I will post more details over the next few days, including what to expect with the new site. Outside of some major interface changes, the biggest new features are a top-down, sort-able series and character database with all prior costumes and photos categorized into it, new account types like "Cosplayer" and "Photographer" (you can be both), and expanded profile pages.

---saving this space for updates---

Update Monday, 5th 3:45pm:

We're finishing some of the post-update design work prior to the update occurring, so the actual offline point could be anywhere from Tuesday night to Thursday morning.

I will be doing a final backup of the forums tonight, so anything posted in the forums after late tonight will not port over to the archived forums on the new site version.

Any costume/photo additions will be fine as they are being added to it in the background already.

When the site update occurs, things will probably look a bit wonky while DNS is getting fixed up in the background. We're adding some additional server infrastructure, so things could be up/down for a good 24 hours.

I will post a URL that won't be affected by any downtime, with official status updates that can be referenced, and it'll also have ETA's post-update for things like when costume/photo uploads are coming back online, as well as a quick timeline of future updates (e.g. calendar) for after the first update is complete.

More to come.

It's finally happening! I recalled seeing you respond to someone about it being ready "in a week" a few weeks ago and was starting to wonder when it was coming. Exciting!

Though Sunday is the 4th, not the 5th. I'm assuming you're sticking with Sunday the 4th over Monday the 5th since it's the start of the week though.

Oh I should prep some photos of my last cosplay to post once the site's fully up and running, and let my friend know she can finally make an account in a few weeks....

Yeah sorry, I meant the 4th - most likely the site will go offline late night on the 4th and then I'll pick up again in the morning. The most likely scenario is that things will be offline for 24 hours, but it could be as long as 48.

While I'm posting, here are a few examples of the brand new series/character database. This thing was a massive undertaking, and resulted in categorizing all costumes and photos (when the photo was tagged with info) into a top-down, browseable catalog of every series and character on the site, sortable by updates and more.

Series will default to last updated, but can be sorted by photos, costumes, and there is also an alphabetical listing to make it easier to find something:

--

If you click on a series, you are taken to its costumes and photos, but can also see a listing of characters to drill down further:

--

Finally there's an additional overall character list that is similar to the series list, sorted by last update, photos and costumes and alphabetically.

Those are just some simple zoomed-in screenshots to show that the database is up and running on the new site.

Oh. An update! Thanks for all the hard work!
P.S. Please tell me the costume icon parameters will be changed to be a little more forgiving?

Costume icons are going away. Now it will take an image of your choosing and automatically create it for you. It defaults to the last image uploaded, but you can upload a specific image to be your "title" image for any of your costumes.

The categories for organizing are great, but will that list have to be manually updated by you with any new series/character that ever comes out? Or will it be updated whenever a user submits a category that's not currently on the site? If that's the case what will happen if multiple people submit it with various misspellings so there's duplicates under slightly different names?

Thank you so much.

The misspellings are the current issue, but won't be a major issue moving forward. When you are adding a costume, it will auto-suggest a costume/character for you, and you can choose it from there. If the character has not been added yet, you can add the new character.

The current problem is that the old data has an absolute TON of misspellings. For example, "Batman" had 70 different entries. I have something in place to combine misspellings into the correct entry, and most have been combined, but it'll take some time before everything has been covered. Basically I have a button to combine one series into another series, and I'll eventually open that up to some trusted users as well.

In the end, most misspellings are one-offs, and series/characters will only appear on the list/search if they have at least 2+ entries. I ran the math and it got rid of around 90% of the misspelled entries, so that's ok for starters. We'll then fix it as we go along. :)

I noticed you said to "save important PMs" at the top of the thread. Does that mean the current PM system is getting revamped or just likely to not be exported to the new format?

New message system, but your old PM's will be archived and readable.

Updated the first post, we'll be starting the site update on Tuesday afternoon/evening. I'll have a status page running with detailed updates for anything that I don't post here before it begins.

Thank you Admin for your hard work! It's great to see stuff getting taken care of. There are 3 things that has, at least, been bugging me with the current version of coscom. These are:

1) Being able to correct a series name on a costume page to the correct one, on both old and new costumes. My Kratos Aurion cosplay has had this issue for a good ol' while now. The character is from the video game Tales of Symphonia but the costume page says "Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World" and I haven't been able to fix that. The newer costumes have the "Series" field blank where information such as character name, when debuted etc. is displayed.

2) Comments on your own photos when said photo(s) has been deleted. I have gone through my cosplay photos throughout the years and delete some of them. However, I can still view the photo and the comments on it when I click the "User Comments" field that takes me to a list where I can see every single comment on all of my photos, included deleted ones.

3) The site's Calender function. I'd personally love to see the Calender getting a big update, it really needs that. There is so many events that's missing, old and new.

So, any changes to any of those bugs/issues when the new update hits the shore? Thanks in advance for your reply Admin

Fixed in new version, but it's an ongoing fix because we also need to combine a lot of misspellings in the background (I've already done around 50% of them). I'll be detailing more about that once the new costume dashboard is live a few days after the relaunch.

Already fixed in new version. :)

The event calendar will come back in update #2 later in the month, and will also be more automated than before, so it'll be easier to keep current moving forward. Once I'm certain everything else is running smoothly, I'll re-launch the calendar/planner section. All old planner data will be ported over, so though it won't show at first it's still in the database for when it returns.
