Hello everyone, I've currently planning a Neko Musume cosplay from the new Kitarou anime. The one thing I really want to do but has me stumped is her claws. I've looked up tutorials and they all involve the use of gloves or the whole fingers. Neko Musume's comes out of her actual nails. I want to make nails like this but the problems I already can think of is that:
1.with them on I can't do anything so I want them easy to get on and off.
2. With them being balanced just on my nailbeds, would they even be able to hold the weight?
3.What materials would even work for something like this?

Plastic would definitely be the way to go.

I'd probably take water bottles and cut them into several sections along those straight grooves. From there depending on the thickness or length of the nails will dictate how many bottles you'll need to cut up. To adjust their shape, use either a heat gun or a stove top. But be careful on this part as you'll need to get it at the right moment or else it will melt and/or burn.

to attach them I'm just thinking of a simple ring that will fit right at the edge of your fingers.

This should cover all your inquiries. I hope this helped.

I've never used plastic bottles for anything before so bear with me please, haha.

How would I attach the different sections of water bottle pieces to each other? Should I even attempt to smooth out the grooved sections or leave it like that?

Save yourself the hassle and make/use gloves! You'll want to be able to go to the bathroom, eat, and drink!

Homestuck, Weeping Angels, etc use this method here

Of course you'll want to go with tights matching your skin tone for this character. You can then use something like the following, or figure out how to make your own

Seconding gloves, though I'll admit it won't be as easy doing things with them still on as it would be if you were doing gloves without the crazy long nails. But also assuming you just do actual gloves and not armsocks like I did once it'll mean they'll be very easy to take off when needed.

I've mentioned them before but I'll bring up MagpieBones again, but this time not about masks! They've made some really incredible "animal hands" before that may give you inspiration. Here's some "normal length" ones and here's some longer/bigger ones. On the shorter ones they mention they used plastic claws for the nails. You'll probably have to make your own due to the nonstandard length but still I'd recommend looking at how the claws Magpie used were likely made. Most animal claws will look like these with a flared base to keep them from falling out and that'll really help to counterbalance that extreme length you're looking for. There's also instructions at that link for how to install them.

Now as for material...I do think plastic may be best for weight at that length, but that may mean attaching a base made out of something else. Maybe you could try adding Instamorph so it's all plastic and it adheres better? I'd be worried attaching a clay base to plastic may not stick well.

Depending on what water bottle you get, adding won't be necessary. Based on it's circumference you're more then likely going to be cutting it down.

I think you should leave the curves of the grooves as nails are naturally like that unless you really want it to be that straight.

Thanks for the tips guys!

Not looking forward to having to make gloves(the bane of my existence =_=) but it sounds like it should work! Is there any glue in particular I should use to connect the nail to the glove?

Another vote for gloves. Having those nails glued to your hand all day would be just horrible. Remember you probably have to eat, drink, and pee.

One large Smart Water bottle should be plenty.

For gluing to gloves: Gem-Tac or E6000 Fabri-Fuse are good options. Original E6000 cement may work well too, but use it in a well-ventilated area.

You may need to reinforce the gloves as well, with something like a thimble on the inside of each fingertip, or at least reinforced non-stretch fabric on the inside of each fingertip. Otherwise those long pointy nails will flop all over the place, especially if you use a stretch material for the glove construction.
