I don't know what immediate ramifications this will have - probably none for the 2015 con.

Perhaps a bigger draw for artists and vendors (less local, more national or international) for future cons.

  • I'm thinking this is going to be a welcome change. Mega is starting to get too big for it's own good so this acquirement by Fan Expo can only be positive.

I'm sure nothing critical will happen this year outside of general announcements but I'm looking forward to whats in store for Megacon next year!

Can't be any worse than last year, am I right?

Man cosplayers are going to talk about last year at megacon like soldiers reminiscing over their last great war.

I'm HOPING Fan Expo handles the crowd a lot better than last year and inevitably this year. I can already foresee the monstrousity that is the crowd this year. I'm actually happy I'm getting to my Hotel room THURSDAY night cause of it.

If you plan on driving to Megacon Friday or Saturday... You're going to have a bad time lol

  • Trying to drive in on Friday morning.

They moved it back to the west building like it has been every other year except last year, so it "SHOULD" be better.

I highly doubt it with all the Media guests this year. After all the years I've been goin I've never wanted to check out panels or actually do CON related stuff... then this year came along. I'm sure the crowd is going to be even BIGGER cause of how good the turnout is for Media Guests this time around.

Friday Morning should be good to arrive too. I wouldn't try to show up anytime pass 1 or 2 cause that's when all the younger folks will start arriving and it really starts to pick up.

We'll see though. The original con hall has a lot of access points and it is a lot bigger so I'm hoping that alleviates people traffic... and traffic in general xD

  • one thing i notice in pass year. is supercon is getting more guest that people want to see. last year was bad planning

  • Megacon updated their website and since I knew they were under new management I decided to check out their cosplay regulations, see if anything had changed. It has. They've hammered down on their prop weapon rules. The one that really (two actually) that stood out was that prop swords have to be tied to your cosplay so they can't be drawn. Wtf? I don't understand. I mean I've never heard of anybody attacking people with a sword or something similar during the con. And I'm sitting here thinking of all the great photos I've seen and took from past megacons where the cosplayers were in battle poses. I know they're looking at it from a safety standpoint, but it's a bit irritating isn't it? I mean you put all this hard work into a sword or battle axe and you can't show it off.

The other thing I saw was that bows/crossbows must be de-strung (yeah that's common sense and it was the same prior to fan expo taking over) but, arrows aren't allowed. I have a cosplay in mind involving a bow and I thought I would make a fake block of arrows for the quiver (you know like just the butt end with the feathers stuck in like a foam anchor just to make it look like a full quiver) and then have an arrow made of plastic or w/e to pose with, to act like I'm drawing back the bow and take a picture.

Also, for those of you cosplaying characters with guns, remember how before you could use airsoft guns as long as they didn't work/you had no ammo and had it checked at the prop location? Not allowed any more. You can still use Nerf guns though, as long as you have no ammo.

The one cool thing I did read (which I had emailed last years management about and they never answered) is on prop guns the orange tips may be made removable for photos as long as it is placed back on the prop gun while walking around the convention.

What are your thoughts on the new prop policy? Has anyone been to another fan expo event (the website made it sound as though all the fan expo owned conventions had the same policies) and there's a loop hole?

I just want to make this clear, because I am not looking to get screamed at for posting this, I get their looking at if from a safety standpoint, but my thing is other conventions have looser rules and nothing bad has happened there. that being said a lot of conventions have some ridiculously strict rules as well. As I said I'm looking at this from a 'man people work so hard to make complete cosplays and these awesome prop swords and now they can't show that part off) and the loss of some awesome pictures.
    Thoughts?

  • that piece of news i did not know of. their new new site is odd.

  • I'm actually thinking about emailing them about it, you know, ask if there's a way to still get those types of pictures without breaking the con rules and getting kicked out. I'm just not sure how to word it. I figure addressing the sword/melee issue and then adding that I like the removable orange ring for the guns is a good way to go, but I'm not sure how to word about the whole 'melee weapons most be attached' thing. Anybody got any suggestions?

I can understand wanting cosplayers to keep swords in scabbards or sheaths when not posing for pictures... Perhaps they could make the rule like the new orange tip rule? I'm taking a sword to MegaCon, and that would be the stupidest thing in the world if I couldn't bring it in without one of those ridiculous bands preventing me from drawing it for pictures. It's freaking high-density foam, people! XD

  • Anybody think I should repost the new weapons policy under its own thread in the megacon category? Maybe to get more of what people think on it? Is cross posting allowed here?
