Tunic Question

  • Hello all. I just joined up because I had a question that I wanted to run by some experienced cosplayers. But basically I have decided on doing my first Crossplay I had a costume commissioned from Japan basically its a tunic. From the pictures I saw I assumed it would be much longer than it is. I even added a couple inches to my height when giving my measurements to hope the hem was a little longer. But when it arrived and I tried it on. (Besides the neck hole being incredibly small and I popped a couple stitches getting it over my head.) The tunic is even shorter than I thought it would be.

I know tunics are supposed to be short to begin with and I already bought a black pair of leggings to go underneath it (They're heavy and cotton even when you bend over you cant see through them.) but the tunic still falls about at the middle of my butt. And sitting down it rides up the rest of the leaving really only the leggins as pants and the tunic more of a shirt than anything. (Seriously I have football jerseys longer than it)

So I know for girls its kind of frowned upon to wear Leggings as pants which is essentially what I have going on right now and I am not entirely comfortable with that to be at a con all day sitting and walking around with the tunic barely covering anything and only having the leggings.

So basically what I guess I am asking is what can I do about this? My first thought was to buy a maroon skirt and put it on underneath the tunic to give me longer coverage. But it would probably look weird with the gold design down the middle all of a sudden disappearing? I don't really have too much skill to sew or alter it in anyway I can basically just do repairs here and there.

Or do I just suck it up as I am attempting a Crossplay and in reality I guess its exactly as long as its supposed to be and its supposed to be worn with Leggins underneath and I just have to figure out how to deal with it like most girls do. I was just hoping for slightly more coverage on the butt for sitting purposes when it rides up a bit.

But perhaps you guys have any other ideas of something I can do to make it work a better way? Or something else to wear underneath?

  • Some girls feel comfortable wearing leggings as pants, some aren't. If you're not comfortable with it, don't do it. I think the shorts would be the best way to go, maybe you can find some biking shorts in the right color? That way they'd blend in with the tunic better, not be so lumpy. It's basically just another layer of spandex, but let me tell you, a layer of spandex is better than no layer of spandex by a long shot.

Have you invested in a dance belt? It keeps everything, erm, in place.

Thank you for your input I appreciate it.

Are you talking about something like this?

That might be a very viable option, I am really not thrilled with the way the tunic lays when I sit in it. The back covers nothing essentially and the front bunches up because its too short to lay on the thigh but too long to sit closer to the waist. So it kind of looks awkward all in all maybe with the shorts it looks less awkward and at least it would give a little more coverage.

And yeah I've already invested in some kind of shapewear that should do the trick I believe.
