Japan cosplay practices?

  • I know that Japanese cosplayers try to conceal their baggage as much as possible when travelling to an event location. My question is to what extend?

If i'm intending to bring a costume in the form of a long dress and is worried it will get wrinkled badly if i kept it inside my bag. Can i use an opaque dress cover in that case?

And if one wants to bring a large prop, do they conceal by wrapping it in fabric or keep inside boxes? At least that's what cosplayers in my country do.

  • the prop yes, as far as the dress goes, then that is fine too. Japanese are kind of embarassed and not too open with cosplay here as it is in the states..... Your practice is really up to you, sometimes i go to an event and my cosplay is in a really big bag, and sometimes its in a suitcase, it's just really up to you.

  • Also double check the event rules. TGS, for example, does not allow large props.

Whether or not you wish to be stealthy about your cosplay is up to you. Japanese people hide it because standing out in general is not a very Japanese thing to do! But if you don't care that people know you're on your way to go dress up, don't worry about trying to hide it.

  • Thank you so much for the advice, it's a huge help!

I'm from Singapore and our cosplay practice is heavily influenced by the Japanese but i wanted to make sure we bring the correct behavior for a cosplay event trip next year. :D

  • so which character are you doing
    i will be there
