Keeping knee/thigh high socks up?

This thread is archived.

  • I have a costume that requires white stockings that come up a little past my knee. Since I'll be walking around in them for the whole day for multiple days I feel as if they will start falling, and I don't want to pull them up every 5 minutes :( is there any trick to make them not slip?

  • What you're probably looking for is some variety of sock/body glue, like this:

There are likely cheaper places to get it, so check around on amazon and e-bay. You also may be able to find it at sports stores - it's the sort of thing used to keep leotards from riding up with movement. I've never really used it before, but I've heard that it's what is suggested for socks and such.

The other option is a garter or garter belt, but depending on the costume, those may be impractical.

  • I had a costume before that had this problem, but if you get some fashion tape it should keep hold of them and keep them from slipping. Just don't put on your skin unless you have to cause it hurts when you pull it off. You should be able to find it almost anywhere, I know walmart and target have some. Good luck with your costume! :)

  • I second the It Stays roll-on. I use that stuff all the time. It holds up the stockings for my Stocking costume like a dream, even after pulling at the tops where there wasn't any adhesive for photos. I've got a friend that uses it all the time for thigh highs and she never has to worry about them falling, even when sweating. Now, if you are in a humid climate, I would suggest carrying it with you because after a long period of time, I've noticed it will weaken a bit, and it's good to have the bottle with you just in case.

  • Another super cheapy but totally functional idea is to use the clear rubbery elastic straps that come attached to the shoulders of wide-neck or strapless tops and dresses. Their intended function is to keep the clothing from slipping off hangers, and they're usually rather strong and have a slightly tacky feel - they stick well to skin without using adhesive. They should usually be long enough to wrap around each leg. Similarly, the clear straps that usually come with strapless bras are insanely well-weighted and are designed specifically to grip onto skin and keep a garment in place (and I think you can usually buy these separate at a lot of dollar stores, or you could try a lingerie shop like La Senza or Victoria's Secret.) If your stockings are textured or patterned, you could sew the elastic around the inside (making a stitch every few inches, not entirely along the edge, as then it won't be able to stretch or bend very well). They may not stay in place exactly where you want them 100% of the time, and a lot depends on the fabric your stockings are made of and the type of elastic you use. But I have a couple of pairs with which I've used this method, and they've stayed up great. (However, if your stockings are pure white, I wouldn't suggest this as then you'll have a very visible extra seam line at the top, and I don't how well that would lend to your costume.) Either way, good luck!

I definitely need to get some of this stuff for my leotard...

  • Sock Glue. Look up It Stays on Amazon.... Works wonders! :)

  • I usually use double stick tape but the It Stays stuff sounds a lot better and a lot less painful. I need to get me some!

Oh man that stuff is comfy to use. The only thing that drives me crazy with the It Stays is the fact that I usually change out of costume and skip a shower because I'm usually still running around, so my jeans like to stick to what's left of it and all. But that's my own fault, and proof the stuff lasts.

  • Def it stays! Because the area is a quote in quote semi sweaty area, the fashion tape dies fairly quickly! I was recommended this stuff and have fallen in love with it!'nn

which brand? there are 2, one looks like its medical

  • How long does sock glue usually last? I might need to use some for a costume this year that also involves white stockings, and it's during Otakon, so it'll be really, really hot...
