A way to fix wigs? Yep! How I resureccted a wig. With pics!

  • I found out a new thing to try based on some advice from a wig company. It was to take the tangled wig, soak it in hot water and fabric softener for a couple hours, then comb it out and let it dry! Here are the pics for proof!

As you can see it was... bad. Really bad. That's what happens when you have a cheaper Halloween wig in storage for a few years. Normally I would have taken a look at it and tossed it out. Now way was I going to try to fix that. Well, I wanted to try what I heard, so, one bottle of cheap Dollar Store fabric softener:

...and a sink full of hot water later....

...and 3 hours of soaking, then a brushing out and a drip dry over night I had this:

I also did it to a purple wig to see if it was a fluke. Worked out well. Then I did it to a more expensive one. It worked again! The amount of fabric softener I used was a couple good glugs, about 2-3 capfulls of the stuff.

So, I guess I can say it's a method that does work! You may need to rinse it some after the brush out though, just in case you get carried away with the fabric softener like I did on one wig.

  • That is totally sexy. I'm going to have to try this on a ragmuffin looking wig I've got. Thanks for the tip and for sharing the wealth!

  • thank you! i just found a wig that's extremely tangled in my closet... going to have to test out this method :)

  • OH WOW. Thank you so much for this! Just to clarify, your wig was tangled before, right?

  • It's recommended to not comb your wig out when it's wet. In fact, it generally stretches out the wig fiber - making the frizzies.
I'm glad it worked for you though! Just a future precaution. =^^=

Maybe it was a necessary evil due to all the knots? I mean it looks horribly knotty o.o

  • It was bad. Really bad. I did a quickie initial comb through when wet to kill the knots, let it dry, then did the rest of the comb through.

  • Oh wow, that's pretty impressive! I have a wig I need to wash and restyle that's getting a little icky itself, I'll have to remember to try this and see if it helps any.
(and someone should totally add this to the tutorial list)

  • I found it will also work for curly wigs, but you have to be extra careful on them.

  • Thanks!!! This is really helpful!!! X3

  • Woah, this looks like it works amazingly well, I have to try this out the next time I have a really tangled wig o__o

  • I have a pretty tangled wig and this worked for you so I think I'll give it a try as well.

  • I know what I'm doing today.....eue....

but 3 hours of soaking? does it matter i'll be doing it to my dead, knotty, half braided miku pigtails?

  • I figure at least 2 hours of nice hot water. I used straight hot water on mine.

  • EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Thank you. ;w; I have a Grell wig that's completely tangled up. Thanks for your help~
