Viola (Soul Calibur V)

• I need help. This will be my first cosplay that i will be doing at up coming Anime Boston Convention (yay!!). I kno i shouldnt do something hard like this but x.x i REALLY want to do it and pull it off WELL! I've read/watched a lot of things and just about to start executing this and i have so much questions and crazy ideas that might or might not be so great and would like some input and HELP!! PLEEEAAASEE!

(Viola's Top)
Would it be better that her top is like a solid armor type thing (since it is a fighting thing) or should i just sew it and make it more like a corset type thing. Reason why i am asking is because i just first thought, "oh, its like a corset, ill just sew this. A peice of cake!". But then i began looking into tutorial like how to make a custom armor and it looks crisp and it would would be so much easier to cut out and put on the ribbons. So what do you guys think?

(Viola's Claws)
Should i use like spray foam and form these myself and paper mache it and stuff? or is there another technique i havent heard of that will be awesome for this.

(Viola's Orb)
How the hell?!?!

Please Help me OUT! And if your going to Anime Boston 2012 LMK! i would love to finally make some cosplay friends! Also, THANK YOU in an advance!

• For the top, I would suggest using a vinyl and bone it like a corset. You could shape it like armor if you wanted, but it might be easier to wear if it was made of a sturdy fabric instead of something too rigid.

The claws...I'm not great on that kind of stuff, so maybe someone else can answer that. But, check out eBay and look at armor rings. That's pretty much what hers are with some points on them.

For the orb, it won't work to carry around at conventions, but for photos you could get one of those glass gazing balls that people put in their gardens. That's a thought at least.

• thank you so much! im probably leaning more towards fabric as well for her top. and i might have to like experiment on the claws, i've seen the ones online but doesnt look as much identical as the one she has

• Okay, how I'm doing my viola(she sits mostly done downstiars or I'd have pictures:

Her top I'm making as a fake corset. I've got an undercorset I'll wear first, then this is cut and styled to fit over it, the side, front and back that are 'open' I'm using nude material to help prevent any 'accidental' moments and sewing the lacing in place. All except one side that will actually lace to allow me in and out.

Her claws I'm making from a combination of polystyrene, craft foam and nude colour netting. I cut out each part of her 'armor' and will draft it out of craft foam then styrene, both can be heated and shaped as I want. The finger part that covers the tips of the fingers and has the claw will be all styrene. The nude netting is to help it hold together as I won't be riveting the armor together, but I want it to flex with my hand.

The orb...that's been fun. I found an old plastic glob(I think it was some fortune telling thing?) at a thrift store, got all the insides out, super heated a metal needle and melted a couple holes in opposite sides so the opening faced me. I then got a cheap LED light and the battery hookups to make it work. I sanded the inside of the globe to make it smokey, then painted it a mix of purple and pink and white. The battery pack and LED go inside, strong fishing line goes as loops through the two side holes and around my fingers. Turn it on and hold it up, viola, floating orb that lights up.

Hope this gives you ideas!

• OMG! that is amazing! thank you so much! vey genius about the nude color corset and i dont kno what are some of the things you said fo the claws but ill look it upp. And the orb... i might have my friend take care of that part x.x Thank you so much :) and i'd love to see some picturesss!

• I will spam with pictures when she's done. but yeah, was gonna make it a functional corset then I thought about it...what if costume malfunctions happened?? I would be mortified, so this way I'm safe :) And this is the polystyrene(also called sintra) though the one I have is a laaaaaaaaaarge white sheet from a local seller.

SPAM AWAY! lol ahhhh how would you use it?(sorry, im a total noobie >.<)

• Spam away! lol

• Thank you so much by the wayy!!

• Is there any other way to make the orb?

• I'm sure there's a million ways, I guess the question is what materials are you comfortable using? For a while I contemplated making it out of a thick balloon and clear resin, or just cheating and 'shopping it into the image after the picture was taken. You may be able to ask around in the prop-making section for ideas from those folks as well.

• Yea i might adventure to the next town or even boston to find a crystal ball or something. but yeaa i might poke around the prop-making section :3

• OH! and the other way, but it'll be heavy and won't be able to light up perse...get a gazing ball. Many garden/home stores still carry them in a variety of colours...saw one in purple at..joanns I think? and figured it would be an okay fall back if I really, really had too.
