Hi guys,

Just wanted to get Masquerade feedback started. This isn't an "omg this skit sucked" kind of thread, this is more about how it was run (either as a participant or an audience member) to see how to improve it for next year.

-Melissa & Edwin

Edit: All Hall Costume Contest related comments should go in this thread:

This includes how the Catwalk at the Masquerade was run, since that falls under me and not Edwin.

Edit 2: List of winners can be found here:

I personally feel like if you wanna do a skit, make sure you have the skill for it. Dancing skits are good examples of this, because all too often what we see are badly choreographed, lame dance skits with just popular music. Same with singing when we hear mostly the actual song rather than the participant. Etcetera.

The hall cosplay walk is usually after the skits, and I personally preferred it that way.

I have to say I also liked having the Hall contest walk across after the skits. This is just my personal preference and not sure if it was done that way this year to make things easier or what. Also I noticed that the award presentation was disorganized to say the least. The awards were out of order and nobody seemed to know what was going on. I'm sure you already knew this though. As an audience member that's all I noticed that seemed really off. Overall I had a great time watching the masquerade this year.

The catwalk was actually moved to the start of the show last year. Logistically, it makes more sense for me on the hall costume side, but its also done in coordination with the relations department for them to provide guests for half time.

For the awards, the HCC awards messed up because of a miss communication between myself and the mc, and the masquerade had a computer error that messed up the script. Both problems will be fixed for next year.

As a participant, I liked having free water. : D

But overall, I felt it was smoothly run... -ish. At times things got a little out of hand and possibly I felt some of the staff didn't know what they were doing or what they had to do but they fixed the problems (at least on my end) in a short amount of time. Also, the staff members were hilarious.

I guess my only suggestion would be to have places for particpants' bags and such to be put somewhere so that we aren't burdening friends, etc. to hold on to them during the entirety of the masquerade. But overall, I felt it was fine. :]

my only complaints were that there were too many dancing skits. that was almost every skit, and so i didnt get to laugh. the funnier skits are the best in my opinion.
but that is not the cons fault, thats more for participants to deal with in the future.

also, yea the awards were majorly mixed up.....so confusing.

as a catwalk participant, i liked it being at the beginning so i could change and relax. i just didnt understand why we had to sit in the back for an hour and a half before we even lined up.

Would it be possible to get a list of the winners? Those of us backstage could not hear what awards were given out because of the confusion during the line-up. It would be nice to know what the judges awards were for and what was given overall to whom.

Overall, I'm very happy with the masq. We were in and out for our scheduled times, never had any problems that a quick chat with a staffer couldn't fix (the changing rooms were locked early on in rehearsal & judging, and the staff didn't realize until we hunted one down to ask them to unlock them). We also had some issues with the techs' sound mixing, which we thought we cleared up with the tech crew after the rehearsal, but they went right back to the bad set-up during the actual performance. =(

We'll work on posting winners for both the masq and hcc wh
en we get home. The rest we'll take notes about and work on next year!

This may not be proper feedback at all, but the masquerade felt much shorter this year. Perhaps I never really checked the time previous years, just wanted to mention it.

#10 Emerald_Star on 7 years ago

It was a little shorter, but its because of less entries. All the cons I've talked to have seen a drop in participants over recent years.

I'd like to say that it ran very well.

I stopped doing the Masq because it ate my Saturday totally and was amazed that this year it didn't. Thank you so much! I liked the set up of rehearse-get judged-go have fun and come back at 6. It really was such a turn around from a couple years ago!

I'm not a fan of the "winners" being chosen out of the green room to line up. Even though you don't know what you won, it's a buzz kill.

That's really the only criticism I have. I know that's a hard one to work with and ya'll are doing your best!

I'll agree with the disorganization as well...but you already knew that. I was a participant in the hall costume contest, and I really didn't have a problem with anything except judging. I'm sure you know that you guys were running late...but I wanted to change for a photoshoot at 5:00, which I was sure that I could make it to because my judging time was 4:05. But I waited for an hour, since we were told to come early, and I got out at right around 5:00, and didn't have time to change, so I couldn't partake in the photoshoot, and only took pictures. But is it possible to fix this for next year? Or maybe figure out how you got so off schedule? Other than that, nothing was bad. I feel like you should have told those participating in the catwalk that there was tape on the stage while we were being lined up rather than backstage.
The masquerade itself was good. It was a little shorter than I'm used to, but I liked it. This was a great first Otakon for me!

I showed up a bit late (missing up until the third skit) and left before the awards were given out, so I can't give any feedback on that process. However, the sound system was just... horrible this year. Everything over the mics sounded pretty screechy to be honest. Maybe there's a way to adjust the output?

#14 otakutre on 7 years ago

I'm Deidre and I was one of the craftsmanship judges for the masquerade this year. If you have any questions about the craftsmanship portion of the judging or if you want some feedback, I'll be more than happy to answer questions to the best of my ability.

I can't speculate on the opinions of or scores given by my fellow judges, whether craftsmanship or performance, so all I can provide is personal answers and feedback!

I do know what got us off schedule, unfortunately it was something that was out of my control (it was an issue where spec ops had to be called in to deal with a situation.) That set us off a bit late. I believe next year judging on Saturday will be starting earlier in the day so thing won't be so rushed towards the end.

As far as the tape thing, it was mentioned on the white board that showed the walking path that was up in the room next to the table with the forms, and I believe was also in an e-mail sent to online registered people. I will try to remind people next year when they line up about it though. I'll also try and get a drawing of the path up on the website for next year and give a more detailed hand out when you check in.

I just have to stress to people to please please please read whats posted and handed out, I try my best to give all the information I can, but it needs to be read. And don't be afraid to ask questions, I'm always available to answer!
