What can you expect from Ohayocon?

This thread is archived.

• I've never been to Ohayocon, I'm going next year, and doing my first crossplay!

XD My question is: What can you expect from Ohayocon? What places do you recommend a newbie checking out? What are some cool places you would recommend to take pictures? What should you avoid?

• I've always loved OhayoCon because of its size, but lately it's been getting very crowded, so expect very busy, very crowded halls. Ohayo is notorious for being a convention that really has no good places to take photos, lol. Plain walls, very unflattering lighting...one of the connecting(?) hotels has a nice, fancy-looking lobby, but other than that, not too great. You might be able to manage something if you have a photographer with you who really knows what they're doing though, and/or if your characters happen to be suited for a city-like setting.

If you're new, just check out everything. Ohayo doesn't really have any super outstanding events that separate it from other cons (that I'm aware of, anyway), but the biggest event is the masquerade, so you might check that out. Plan on lining up for it 2+ hours in advance though.

Also, if you are staying at the con hotel, expect to take the stairs. There are always elevator issues, and usually only one or two working elevators at a time.

• Thank you! It's good to know that it doesn't really have a good places to take specific type of photos, because that will mean I will have to change my cosplay for the convention then to one that's more suitable. So thank you for letting me know! :3

• I went for my first time this past year, and I really suggest you check out some of the voice actors panels <3 They're a whole lot of fun and definitely very lively! Also, if you have a favorite voice actor and they happen to be there get their autograph and talk to them!! Brad Swaile is one of the coolest VA's that I've met so far~ He gave my friend a birthday shout out and I was so excited ; n ;!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wq2B7O06xc

A lot of the voice actors will say lines in their characters voices too from the series they voice in, so it's really fun to be able to meet such wonderful voice actors!!! However, make a note on their popularity, because you may need to wait in line for a few hours, or wait even an hour or more in advance to be able to see them @__@;;; I missed out on getting to meet Todd and J. Michael Tatum because they ran out of time and I waited over two hours in line ; n ; Carrie Savage was really cool, cuz even though time ran out, she met, talked to, and signed autographs for everyone who was waiting outside in line for hours!

I also enjoyed going to the abridging panels, and if you want to relax and get out of some of the commotion, I'd say find one of the rooms playing movies or animes and just chill in there, it's a nice break and quieter! And it can be pretty crowded and noisy too x3

OH!!! And the Dealer's Room and Artist Alley is always always a must see in my opinion!! So many cute things~ Also, don't buy certain things on impulse because you may find a dealer selling something you want for a lesser price than what another dealer may be selling the same thing for ^^ I scouted around to get a Haruhi Plushie and got mine for like.... 13 dollars I believe and other dealer's were selling for 16-18 dollars for the same doll X3 And Artist Alley is really awesome!!! AceofTiberon from Deviant Art (sorryifImisspelledthat) was there and I like was so happy because I didn't know she'd be there and she's one of my favorite comic artists on deviantart, so it was really cool to see her there~ And there's many artists there selling their art work that they've put a lot of effort into, so it's worth checking out ^^

Also, watch who you cosplay because some cosplayers are pretty random xD My one friends friend cosplayed Sebastian and not only got glomped but I believe she said she got licked on the cheek by a Grell cosplayers xDDD I was like.... O___O WHAT!? XD;; I liked the upstairs for taking picture where the bar was and whatnot for pictures and you can also find some awesome cosplayers there too xD But depending on how you are, be careful up there cuz people are drinking and whatnot~ XD;;

Also, get there as early as you can if you're buying your badges at the door, I honestly recommend pre-registering, it is not only cheaper, but you don't have to wait as long also, but timing is everything, so there still is a wait depending on the times you go!

I also recommend the crafts and whatnot~ Funimation did a Princess Jellyfish Craft I believe at this past OhayoCon, sadly I missed it to see Brad Swaile, but I really wish I could have made it there ; n ; !!!

Hope this helps at all... orzz ; n ; -flails-

• @RitsukaFlame:

Ah, thank you so much! If John Burgmeier happens to ever go to Ohayocon I will definetely go and check the panel out! :D He's my favorite voice actor!

I will love to go and check the Dealer's Room and Artist Alley out, I've heard a lot of the things are costly, so I'll do that for sure. *.* I guess it's the fear of leaving something behind and then it being sold later. -.-; But I will check every place out before buying on impulse. I've heard that Yaya-chan frequents cons too and that she's a sweetheart, so it'd be cool to meet her too. ^ ^

Omg, wait, whut? I can't believe people still glomp people randomly! I'll prepare myself for that! So upstairs is known to be a place for drunk people? o.O I'll be careful then. We will probably pre-register to avoid some of the craziness, thank you!

• I attended Ohayocon from 2008-2011. I enjoyed it and previously competed for costume craftsmanship until their cosplay department started having a lot of problems. I didn't bother attending this year in favor of attending Katsucon instead. I'm skipping Ohayo from now on because I much prefer Katsucon. The programming is better, and the dealers/artist areas are much larger. The badge price isn't all that different and the location is MUCH better for cosplay photos.

Their cosplay department? o.o What are you referring to? The people cosplaying or the team that manages the costume craftsmanship contest? Sorry, I'm a little confused. Was the experience in general a good one if you're going to cosplay?

Ah, Katsucon seems beautiful. It looks so lovely and the fact that they have a little built-in town inside it's adorable. It's one of the cons that I want to go to. Yaoicon and Dragoncon too. :)

Thank you for your input!

• Theres lots of good places to take pics if you know where to look. We did a bio shock shoot in an unlocked maintenance hallway. Ohayocon is my favorite con. I love every minute of it and wish it came around more often :(

•
Blah blah blah I wanna go to Ohayocon but I'm not cool enough!
I FIXED IT FOR YOU MY DEAR!

• Kevin you're a butt! And you're just jelly!

I'm not helping you carry your blue tubs!

:waaaah:

• But seriously you and Lindsay should come to Katsucon. We could use another two people in our room. :3 Plus all the awesome locations for photos and you can practice photography.

HappehPills, in case you're wondering Kevin is a good friend of mine. He's known for filling our con hotel room with his blue tubs full of stormtrooper armor.

XD Oh, okay! Hahah, that's cool to meet a Stormtrooper cosplayer! A friend of mine told me that there was a huge group of them on the last Colossalcon!

• Lately Ohayocon has gone downhill IMHO, but I will list some of the pros and cons (again, just my opinion).

Pros

The Ayres Brothers
Dealer's Room
Food Court

Cons
Long lines/Crowded
Mismanagement (no clear signs, schedule and guests not listed until very close to the con)
Rude staff (A few security & line control)
Fanart ban (Most companies don't care because most people buying it purchase their stuff anyway)
Rude con attendees

I think the fuss about security and staff fromthis year will change some things for next year, and youll have rude con goers at all cons sadly
