Dark Souls 2 announced

  • Yeah I'm still hung up on the name.

    Dark Souls 2? o_O?

  • Maybe it's because the game should technically be called Demon Souls 3?

  • Dark Souls 2 is a pretty uninspired title. I would have rather they called it something like Damned Souls. But mostly I'm just really happy that From is making another one.

That's what I mean. Oh well!

Agreed, but it wouldn't be a first for FROM Soft. Armored Core sequels aside, their original dungeon-crawler series (King's Field) only had numerical sequels, and there were four of those. (We got KF4 as "King's Field: The Ancient City," though.) However, they could have gone the route they went with Shadow Tower (the sequel was called Shadow Tower: Abyss) or Echo Night (Echo Night: Beyond). While the very name "Dark Souls" could help sales more than a title that panders to those of us who just want to see some exciting new prefix to the prevalent word "Souls," perhaps they could still make things more interesting by calling it "Dark Souls II: ______ of the ______" (use your imagination there)

In other words: Yeah, I wanted "Damned Souls" too, but like it or not, Dark Souls has made a name for itself and is now a powerful franchise, and I'd hate to see it make a few less thousand sales just because it went under some peoples' radars.

I considered going back and trying King's Field, but I never owned a PS1 and the PS2 re-release package apparently wasn't localized. Didn't seem worth it to mod my PS2 and drop a ton of money for an import just to satisfy my curiousity.

Also, Dark Souls II is more of a direct sequel to Dark Souls than that was of Demon's Souls. From the gameplay trailer it's clear that it's open world and bonfires again as opposed to the central hub Nexus of the first one. And they claim that the stories are related although the world is not Lordran. Interestingly, the Humanity counter appears to be gone so I'm curious to see how they'll handle the alive/undead switching.

Dark Souls II: The Pain, When Will it End?

If you go to a second-hand shop, the US versions of KF2 and 3 (localized as KF and KF2; we never got the Japanese KF1) should be DIRT CHEAP. Also, The Ancient City should be cheap depending on the shop. (I've been to one where it was $20-something, another couple where it was $3 and $4) Still, between all of their first-person dungeon crawlers, Shadow Tower is still my favorite. (never played Abyss, I wonder if it's been fanslated by now...)

[/quote]This, supposedly. And yeah, I'm really itching to see how they handle living and not-so-living, this time around. Can't wait. So hype, for this alone. Hopefully there won't be any weird stuff like the "You Hollowed" thing early on in the game's release, or the original statements that you'll hollow more and more, and lose more and more HP permanently until you become "alive" again. (something from early Dark Souls interviews.)

As irritating as it was to lose half your HP in soul form in DeS, the gaming masochist in me feels that there was not enough of a penalty for being hollow in DaS, and thus avoid invasions. It seems pretty clear to me that From wants people online and interacting. So it wouldn't surprise me to see them introduce a new twist that encourages people to be alive more.

    Fixed that for you.

And maaan. I'm seeing a release date of Dec. 31. Thanks, Christmas rush.

A Dec. 31 is generally a place holder date meaning it's expected to be out before the end of the year but an official date hasn't been set. My guess is that it will be in October like the other two. But that may just be wishful thinking!

  • Eh... I'd personally actually care more for a December release. I've got Assassin's Creed IV on the line and I really don't want to be fighting my husband for console/PC rights again.
