Is Leia Now Considered a Disney Princess?

This thread is archived.

  • Just curious to know what people think ^_^.

  • No.

  • Disney Princesses are only from the main Disney or Pixar production of the year and have to be added to the line-up by Disney. Everyone who is not part of the line-up (i.g. Nala or Kida) are not considered a "Disney Princess". Also, Disney Princesses are usually from animated movies. Leia is neither a character made by Disney nor from an animated movie, also Disney hasn't planned to add her to the line-up- so the answer is no.

  • "Disney Princess" is an official title not given to every single princess who belongs to Disney, so the requirements are not just Disney + Royalty. they have more to do with the Walt Disney Corporation deciding how they want to market certain characters. interestingly, a few of the Disney Princesses aren't princesses at all, such as Mulan, Pocahontas (a chief's daughter isn't the same thing as a princess, it'd be like calling Obama's daughters princesses), and Belle (who never actually gets married to the Beast in her movie...). still, they have the honor of being apart of the official Disney Royal Court, though unfortunately Mulan and Poca don't have nearly enough merch nowadays considering how awesome they are...

  • She hasn't been added to the official line up so I say no. Although, I do enjoy a lot of the jokes about her being a Disney Princess.

I didn't think of that, which is also why Giselle hasn't been added to the line up either. I also recall they didn't do so to avoid paying royalties to Amy Adams so the same is probably true for Carrie Fisher.

  • Wow! This has been an education for me ^_^. I didn't realize that there were such strict criteria for a character to be considered an official Disney Princess.

I suppose I should have asked if Leia is now considered a Disney character. Some friends of mine have asked me to participate in their Disney group, but I don't have a Disney girl costume yet (or the time to make one). One lady suggested that I wear my Leia, but I thought that might look odd/silly next to the rest of the characters. Hence my original question ^_-.

well, the other day at EPCOT i saw that they were already selling a collection of car stickers of different Star Wars characters, all with mouse ears on. Princess Leia's even had a princess hat too, so i guess they count now! as much as Pixar characters do anyway, like the way they are under the Walt Disney umbrella though not specifically from Disney Animation Studios.
maybe you could add some mouse ears to your Leia cosplay! XD

  • Pretty sure they are treated as Disney characters now - they've got a huge presence at the theme parks now at least.

  • Giselle never was a princess. she was an "almost" princess if she married Edward, but she didnt. so in that movie the "real" disney princess is Nancy. just saying. the royalties thing was to have her in the park as a face character.

but to say Pocahontas isnt a princess because she is a chiefs daughter is not correct. obama is voted in, a chief if history class has taught me anything is a passed down title like king. and goes thru bloodlines. so it is more the equivalent of princess than presidents daughter. we never see belle get married but it is implied. you dont need to see a wedding for it to have happened. mulan is the only one that doesnt make sense.

  • I only voted yes because she is in my own little fantasy world. Obviously she's not really a Disney princess.

But if I recall correctly, the franchises Disney bought are presented seperately. They are not in all the Disney parks (usually just in the US). Power Rangers wasn't in the regular Disney parks as well.

Pocahontas isn't technically a princess because there is no such thing as American Indian royalty. the "Indian Princess" is a harmful and inaccurate stereotype of actual Native American cultures. i'm having trouble finding any official information on how the Powhatan tribe specifically was run in 1607, but chiefdoms work differently than monarchies. the methods of choosing new leaders differs from nation to nation, but they often do not rely on bloodlines. many tribes have a council of elders responsible for choosing who should be the next chief, and most modern tribal governments are run very democratically.

but like i said before, she can still be a Disney Princess without being official royalty so yeah.

  • I live in a country where the modern government is derived from a tribal one; correctly, the female "royalty" are Sheikhas but have adopted the title of "Princess" in the modern era since they often meet with same from other countries- therefore to me it's not such a stretch that you could consider Pocahontas as one, if only as a title as a Chief's daughter...

  • I think trying to hear Leia sing would slay me. (As of right now, I think Merida is the only official Disney princess who doesn't sing?)

  • Yes she's a Disney baby, don't hate her because she's CGI.
