Looking for photographers and photoshoots

This thread is archived.

  • Hi Guys,

I will be going to NYCC as Supergirl, a Castanic from Terra and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch. I will definitely be going to the Marvel vs. DC photoshoot on Saturday but does anyone know of any other photoshoots that I could make an additional costume for? Or, does anyone know of any photographers who are open to doing photoshoots at the convention?

  • I too, have been looking for a photographer. I would like to ge tin a private photoshoot if at all possible at NYCC for at least one of my costumes. Please PM me if you are a photographer!

  • I never been to NYCC so it will be our first, but if we have time I would like to do a few photoshoots. You can see a few shots here but none of them are personal shots.

Good stuff. Does he charge for shoots though?

  • You probably would need to contact him to figure that out. Just because it might depend on how long you want the shoot to be / how many people ect. But i doubt most photographers will do a full shoot completely for free or without some type of arrangement.

  • I don't know about that. Almost every photographer my sister and I have ever worked with does not charge. Not all the good photographers charge.

Here's an amazing photographer I know will be at NYCC. https://www.facebook.com/ObscuraVista
Not sure what slots he still has available though.

And another great photographer we know(who does charge, but not much) is https://www.facebook.com/GerTysk?ref=ts

Some of them(including a guy who works for Time) said that charging people is evil and messed up. He wouldn't even accept a tip..after a 6 hour shoot. So not all the good photographers charge.

My main point was that I don't know if he is charging or not. I didn't want to say he is/isnt and then have it be different. I'm sure you can find anyone with a DSLR calling themselves a photographer to do a shoot for free. I was just saying it is generally harder to find someone who is a professional photographer by trade to spend multiple hours at a major convention like NYCC to do a shoot without any compensation. And that compensation doesn't always translate into money, it can sometimes be an arrangement to use the photos for their own personal use or sale.

I've actullay never paid for a shoot in the 10+ years I've cosplayed. But thanks for the info

TBH a lot of paid professional photographers by trade WOULDN'T be doing cosplayer photoshoots at NYCC if they were there, unless they were working on a story, or like you said, personal use. I've shot regularly with Marvel's photographer even since...2006, I wanna say, and I know 9 out of the 10 times we've worked together, the majority of any Marvel-related photos I've shot with here end up on their website, which basically become their property. But they're awesome photos, and occasionally I'll get some non-water marked ones, so that's okay (Anything not-Marvel related gets her personal stamp, which I'm also fine with).

That being said, if a photographer is asking for any sort of comprensation for a photoshoot these days, they better deliver. I've shot with guys who will mail you a cd copy of his photos, with the rawrs and edited photos, for free. Given how many photographers there are now in the hobby, it's kind of hard to charge if you only offer 30 minutes of shooting.

I think Ger has filled up all her spots though.

  • Hey Guys,
I'm Pete, the photographer that endo500 mentioned. I am looking to put together some shoots both at the con and just in general if you live in the NYC area. So if you're interested let me know. I do have several requests already (on top of my regular client schedule as Endo500 can attest to) so I'm going to be a little picky about who I can photograph, when and where. But please feel free to reach out.

You can find me at my website, facebook or twitter fairly easily:
    http://petelabrozzi.com
    https://www.facebook.com/PeteLabrozziPhotography
    https://twitter.com/PeteLabrozzi

As for all this talk of charging or not... I'm most likely not going to be charging at the con but I'm also not planning on doing super long or detailed shoots there either. I'm a regular working professional who charges clients to do shoots almost every day of the week. But it just so happens that I'm into comics and anime and I love going to the cons. Part of my enjoyment is visiting panels and the show floor, and part is plying my trade with all your amazing costuming skills to come out with unique photos.

But if you ever want to set up a shoot with a photographer, and I'm speaking about someone who makes their living taking photos, I don't think it's fair to consider them wanting to charge to be evil, messed up, bad or otherwise. It would be like me asking you talented folks to put together a cosplay outfit for me, materials, time, talent and all, and then not even considering paying you anything.

Of course you might do it just for exposure, experimentation or just for fun. Just like I do at the cons and sometimes otherwise. But other photographers and I also need to pay bills and put food on our tables at the end of the day. If we all worked for everyone for free all the time, we'd be homeless in short order. I don't think there's anything evil or messed up about that.

Anyway, looking forward to connecting with you and making some great art!

I was just quoting what I was told. Which is not my opinion necessarily. I just wanted to say that in reply to the other post saying that all photographers charge at conventions, I guess to show people that have never dealt with a photographer before at all that various photographers have different policies and different ideas on things.

But I'm more than willing to delete that part of my post if you want, and obviously, since I'll be working with a photographer who does charge at NYCC, I don't think they're all evil assholes or something. I just wanted everyone to see all of the opinions out there about cosplay photography.

I wasn't trying to be mean and callous, or start any arguments, or make it seem like anyone who does charge is wrong. So..like I said, I'll delete that if you want.

And @Felix: Yeah, now that I think about it, GerTysk is probably all booked.

  • Thanks guys. Pete (NewYorkCosplay), I contacted you through your website and hopefully the message went through. I really appreciate all the referrals. I just moved to NY from Seattle and am need of finding some talented cosplay photographers here.

  • I am still looking for a photographer my self. The few that I had contacted are already booked =/
