Cosplay Pet Peeves

My other top peeve is the way people have been treating cosplayers who commission rather than make there own costumes and also the way some people here have been bad mouthing commissioners (people who make commissioned costumes) Not everyone can sew a costume themselves and there are various reasons why this happens. Just because someone bought their costume doesn't make them lazy or not a 'true' cosplayer. It simply means that they, for whatever their reason, would rather have someone else make the costume. As for commissioners themselves, not every person who makes costumes for money is out to trick you or to take your money and run without giving you the services for which you have paid. There are plenty of legit commissioners out there if you know where and bother to take the time to look.
WIN.

*ehem* My cosplay pet peeves? The WalMart effect. Look, people, when you ask for a commission, keep in mind that things WILL be expensive. None of us (I hope) run factories in third-world countries that pay children minimum wage to sew your costumes or whatever. We're all doing this ourself, meaning that we have to hand-pick the supplies, materials, patterns, and whatever else is being needed. PLUS, we have to take time out of our schedule for your order. So again, don't expect things to be so cheap ^_~

Another things that bothers me is some of the Masquerade skits. I see people come on stage on crappy, thrown-together random Naruto costumes, kiss each other, and get better attention than people with nice, well constructed costumes that execute a planned skit. I'm tired of the, "I DON'T CARE ABOUT THAT DEAD-ACCURATE MARIE ANTIONETTE CAUSE OH LOOK SASUKE KISSED NARUTO-CHANNNNNNN! WAI BAKA NEKO ARIGATOU MORE JAPANESE!"

>_> Yeeeeah.

• I think my biggest peeve in the cosplay world would be one that applies to most other aspects of life: LACK OF RESPECT.

People fail to respect other's costumes if they aren't as "up to par" as they think it shoudl be.

People fail to respect other cosplayers time and efforts they put into really intricate costumes, an idiotic glomp can ruin a prop or costume.

People fail to respect how wearing pasties and body paint to a con might offend others there.

People fail to respect those who choose to wear said pasties and think they are walking insult targets.

People who DON'T cosplay fail to respect those who do, and are sad and pathetic enough to judge and call them names.

People who don't like a cosplayer's character fail to have the intelligence to differentiate between cosplayer and character.

So basically, if you can't be respectful of yourself and other people around you, just do everyone a favor, stay at home, and keep your opinions to yourself.

• My biggest pet peeve? People who expect you to do everything AMAZING and on your own and to use only the more popular methods.
(1) I have a VERY full schedule. If I can find an item to alter in a store for cheaper than the materials to make it on my own- I'm not going to waste my time making something that's right there. If you wanna make everything from scratch, great. Don't make anyone feel less because of it.
(How many times do I read in threads here, "Oh, I could NEVER alter something store bought! There's so much self satisfaction in doing it yourself! You should too!"?)
(2) There's more than one way to do things. Sure, some one parted their wig without using the Katie Bair method (*gasp! shock!*). Does it make it less of a wig? No. It takes time to develop your own methods and if it holds together and looks good, who cares?

• This thread is fun, but it's likely to get closed.

I'll put in my two cents before that happens. :)

I'm really annoyed, for one, by all of the RULES at anime conventions (and on this site). I know that there are good reasons for those rules, but why did people have to be so STUPID as to get those rules put in place? The ones that annoy me most are rules against staves (or rules at certain sci-fi cons that say that you have to have your staff TIED TO YOUR BODY to have it), signage (not that I use it, but what's it harming), taking photos without permission, etc. Obviously, someone abused the privilege of doing those things and got the privilege taken away from everyone.

I'm also annoyed that this new-found cosplay cat-fighting has started pouring over into sci-fi cons. I had a girl backstage at a sci-fi con masquerade complaining about how everyone's costumes sucked (even telling some people) and nitpicking about my Setzer and Daryl costumes. Which leads me to my biggest peeve...

IF SOMEONE DIDN'T ASK YOU, DON'T NITPICK! It's simple, really. A cosplayer has his reasons for not having a "perfect" costume, and even "constructive criticism" when not asked for, can seem like arrogance or nitpicking. If someone wants you to tell her what she could improve on a costume, she'll ask or put it in the criticism forum.

• One of my biggest pet peeves are cosplayers (or generally someone involved in the scene) telling others not to cosplay a certain character because it's 'overdone'. If someone likes a character or even just the costume, they shall do exactly what they like, no matter how many others might or might not have done it before.

EXACTLY. I have competitons with my freinds to see who can count the most Inuyashas in one day. Its fun.

The sign thing...Some sings are okay. Like my freind had one at Otakon asking if anyone had heard of a certain series...cause it's kinda unknown. We met some cool people that way. Some sings though...bug me...

and uhhh...I wear cat ears sometimes when I'm not cosplaying...but i don't call it cosplay. I jsut like the wear them cause I'll get looked at strangly if i wear them anywhere else.

I think there should be a con with no cosplay contest...lIke have a Masqurade but don't have any awards. See how many cosplayers show up for that.

• I don't like how someone will want to cosplay a well-known character or an "over-done" character just for the publicity it serves, but then don't bother doing it fully. For example (and I'm not trying to put anyone in particular down or point out specific people), at last year's Anime North, I saw at least 150 Naruto characters running around; some of them I'm sure weren't even wearing a full costume, just the head band and sandles. Often, I see many Chii's running around; many of them are wearing ordinary goth clothes or dresses that Chii never wore, but as long as they're wearing Perscom ears, that somehow justifies it.

But overall, whatever floats their boat. If they're having fun, why get on their case? So long as no one bothers me, I won't bother them.

• I hate "drive through" cosplay photography. People walk or run by and take your picture without saying anything or thanking you and take off. I find it so rude.
Thankfully I have a good experience with cosplay, but then again, I don't bother with masqueraude or any other sort of cosplay contests.

4) I'm sorry, but while it is considered fun and nothing but that, wearing a sign saying your character so-and-so or wearing a cut-out of a character from a broad just... doesn't do it at all...
well sometimes people just want to be funny...i give them credit for the idea....but when a million people start doing it....it sure does get annoying. wearing a cutout of a character certainly cannot compete in a competition however. hehehe

•
just something tossed together with no effort behind the character design and clothing process.
I'm just going to take this little snip it and agree.
if ur gunna do something, do the best you can do at it.
But it irks me a little when the effort is compleetly not put in at all.

• I've never been to an actual con, so it's not really my place to say with a 100% passion. However, talking to my friend about her last con, I got really upset when she talked about some J-pop or J-rock cosplayers ignoring or acting rudely to anime cosplayers. I'm NOT saying everyone does this, she just mentioned she's seen it happen. Also, I know I would get incredibly angry if I heard someone snickering and whispering about someone in cosplay that is consitered 'ugly' or 'fat' to them. That to me is probably the worst thing someone could do during a con.

• Over use of satin...
And tinsel wigs......Why do those even exist?!?

•
My pet peeves are many but the one that tops the list are cosplayers who think that they are 'God's gift' to cosplay simply because they have gotten recognition for a costume or have won an award. Then they act like they are the authority on that particular costume or on cosplay in general and when they bother to give advice to anyone else, if they bother to at all, they do so with a snobbish air but without really giving help to the person who asked. That ticks me off to no end. They seem to have forgotten that they were once new to cosplay too.
I agree with this 100%. That is one of my top pet peeves, along with the more 'superior' cosplayers not getting along with us other cosplayers. It's really sad. :/

• This might have been said already... but I get real irked when someone dresses up as the same character as someone else (or you) and acts all better than the other for some reason.

Another thing that irks me is when a group of people (or two) randomly bust out into a fight for attention. Besides the fact that's dangerious... it hogs attention and makes moving around the halls impossable.

• I'm glad I've never witnessed that - fighting in a convention, I mean @_@ I hope I never have to, but...eh.

I agree with everyone about respect and cosplay. Since most everyone does it for fun and as a hobby, people shouldn't expect that everyone who cosplays does it perfectly. People have different ranges of skills and should be recognized as such.

Anyhow, one thing that I don't particularly care for (and mind you this is just personal preference, I'm not trying to say that it's bottom-line bad) is when people combine two characters into one costume for a completely different character. An example was that I saw this girl and she looked like she was Yuna from FFX-2, but was missing a few key pieces to her costume. I didn't realize until later when I saw her posting pictures on another message board from that she was actually a combination of Yuna and Rikku. When I understood what she was going for the costume was pretty well put together, but my intial impression was that she had missed a few things. Her costume seemed incomplete to me until I realized what she'd been trying to do.

I also don't like it when people cosplay just to get attention.....
