MEGATON: PlatinumGames Developing Metal Gear Solid Rising

  • Redubbed "Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance," the new trailer debuted at the SpikeTV VGAs this evening:

    Metal Gear Bayonetta?

    Bayonetta Gear Solid?

    Take your pick.

    EDIT:

Okay, so maybe this wasn't such a megaton after all. I was unaware of the fact that rumors about PlatinumGames' involvement have been circulating since E3.

Also, the game is apparently no longer set between MGS2 and MGS4, as originally planned. It was initially supposed to show the transformation of Raiden into his cyborg ninja form seen in MGS4, but that has since been scrapped.

The game is now set several years after the events of MGS4 in order to give PlatinumGames more freedom in the storytelling and gameplay departments. It will now be a straight up action game with little to no stealth (originally it was still going to involve some stealth elements and even the option to not kill a single human opponent).

  • Well, in other news, Mr. Kojima begrudgingly accepted making another actual Metal Gear. The shock value and excitement in each installment are in hindsight dampening the experience since each installment tries to deliver a failed sense of finality. Spoiler: if you know you can't resist accepting a paycheck to start another MGS, you should probably stop saying each one is the last one. It makes the previous final installment suddenly purposeless in the grand scheme of MGS things.

  • At least Kojima isn't actually directing this. Someone at Platinum is handling those duties. We don't know who it is yet, but we definitely know it's not Hideki Kamiya.

The less this game has to do with MGS4, and the less Kojima is directly involved, the better, as far as I'm concerned. Still wish Kamiya was directing it, though.

  • Last of Us was more megaton than anything Metal Gear related.

...wat? Did you finish 4, because I'm pretty sure it tied up EVERY lose end with that 30+ minute ending.

Also, the new trailer looks awful (game-play look sluggish/non-fluent & lots of LOL LETS FLIP THIS METAL GEAR UPSIDE-FUCKING-DOWN). Never been fond of Platinum (deal with it) and their awful storytelling, so I have little to no interest in this game. MAYBE a rental...and that's a big maybe.

Yeah to maybe the 5 people who think Naughty Dog can do no wrong.

As for MG: REVENGANCE, the game looks ridiculous, and I will gladly give up $60 for it.

  • Well, The Last of Us did offer a possible explanation for what went wrong with Uncharted 3. The director of Uncharted 2 was working on this instead.

Trololololo. Naughty Dog is a generally respected developer. Cry about it though.

Nothing was wrong with Uncharted 3. Still one of the best games this generation, did some things better and some things worse than the previous games.

Which is why they had to patch the aiming system 2 weeks ago right?

I like Naughty Dog for the most part, and Uncharted 2 is still the best game to touch the PS3. Uncharted 3 was a let down though IMO, as well as several people on coscom, let alone the internets. Not a terrible game, but certainly not one of the best games this generation as you claim. Not with a paper-thin story, a sluggish start and hit or miss controls. It's a shame that Subway money couldn't ensure more time on fine-tuning the product.

As for their new game, a video aside, what was there to get excited about? The VGA announcement offered NO gameplay screens/videos, release date, or anything other than "Hey, Naughty Dog is making a pseudo-zombie game for the PS3".

Kojima, meanwhile admitted he was struggling w/ the game, so he got one of the best development teams in Japan to pull his fat out of the fire, and make a kick ass action game. That's kind of big, given Kojima's status in the biz, and it further proves has dumb Capcom was to drop Clover BACK IN THE DAYYYY!

    I thought this wasn't a troll thread?

To be fair, there's a difference between respecting someone or something and thinking they can do no wrong.

Maybe the way he worded it could be considered troll-worthy, but he's not wrong. Rising was on the verge of being cancelled before it was handed over to Platinum, because the KojiPro team just couldn't figure out how to turn it into an actual game.

They had produced little more than a tech demo before hitting the proverbial brick wall with the "cut everything" mechanic that would have otherwise broken the game.

  • Platinum's games have terrible story-telling, but I do think they have amazing action sequences. Bayonetta is still one of my favorite action games, combining ridiculous over-the-top gimmicks with hard difficulty and combat reminiscent of fighting games requiring proper timing and combos and punishing you for mindlessly mashing random buttons. It doesn't take itself seriously and doesn't need a deep plot or anything to still be a great action game.

Metal Gear Rising, however, I dunno. I haven't seen any recent trailers from it or anything to really judge it right now. It'll be interesting to see if Platinum adds any personal touches. But since it's Platinum, the story will probably suck but I trust them to do good action games. ...Which is actually what makes me nervous, and why I never had high hopes for this game in the first place. Why are they turning Metal Gear into this type of game? I know it's supposed to be a spin-off about Raiden, but it seems like they wanted to experiments with genres and slap the Metal Gear name on it so it would sell. It's probably going to be a good action game, but a good Metal Gear game? I don't know.

For reals, it was LEGIT canned before Platinum took over:

Terrible is kind of harsh, but I agree, it's not exactly Platinum's strongest point. Bayo's plot was a hot mess, but Vanquish & Madworld were pretty straight foreward, despite lacking much depth.

Also in MGR: Revengenance's defense, this isn't exactly the first time a non-stealth game has dropped with the MG name attached to it. AC!D were 2 different card games, and there was that movie.....you know, MGS4.

Not trolling, but if there's anything the MG series needs less of, it's plot. 1 & 3 were brilliant games, some of the best of their respected generation, but Kojima needed to be toned the hell down for 2 & 4.

  • Revengeance is going to be terrible. And I'm going to laugh while you all try to cover up for it.

  • Whatever helps you sleep at night, man.
