Morrigan [Dragon Age] - Technial Questions

This thread is archived.

• xD Awesome that your mom is gonna be Flemeth. I have three friends that would be PERFECT as Alistair, Leliana, and a player character but uhm, yeah, talk about complicated costumes those would be to make. Lots of armor. One day maybe haha.

Not sure I quite get it but I never had thought of a zipper. Sounds more structurally sound than anything I had bouncing around in my head.

I was thinking of printing out the map of Ferelden and making it look aged and bringing it with me xD And making the Final Reason staff :D It looks like Wynne's starting staff but silver. That should be fun to make.

I might start mine over winter break. My skirt, I mean. I don't have a fabric or pattern or anything for her top. I'm at a bit of a loss for the bikini too since there are a few different ways to approach it and I'm not sure how lol. Or the best fabric.

• I'm not sure if this was answered or not already, but the hood is not a complete hood, the bottom/back does not attach to the fabric, her hair sticks out of the back. It is similar to Rikku's white mage dressphere in FFX-2 (X).

Also, props to you, I LOVE Dragon Age Origins!! =]
I wish I could cosplay somebody from it, but I don't see that happening anytime soon XD

• I've just decided to tackle this costume myself. I'm altering the top a bit to suit my bosoms- the cowl part is staying the same, but the bra needs to be way more supportive. A cowl is pretty easy since it's just a lot of fabric draping, and hoods are EXTREMELY easy to construct. I'm sure you can find patterns to modify if you're going in that direction.

With the skirt, hook and eye closures have traditionally worked for me with heavier fabrics. I'm probably going to use hidden closures underneath when keeping the skirt closed. From my examinations, it seems like the skirt goes over leggings, so it that gives you some extra leverage for support as you can hide attachments inside. I've done an FFX Lulu costume myself, so there's a lot of techniques I'll be repeating when I construct this costume.

As for the jewelry, the bars on her bib necklace are probably going to be cut from lightweight wood, sanded, sealed, and gold-leafed or foiled for the appropriate finish. Then I'll attach them to a leather collar. I'm guessing the other components will be crafted from Sculpey or Paperclay and finished appropriately, although for the focal cabochon I'm not sure whether I'll go with an abalone or manmade-opal type cab or make something myself. I'm sourcing beads and whatnot. There's a lot of leeway since there are different ways to interpret her jewelry. For the beads hanging right under her bib necklace, I've been looking into coin beads in either quartz or hammered silver, just because I think that would look good aesthetically.

I'm going with a wig for her hair. Haven't figured out how to tackle it yet, as I need to really examine what her hair actually looks like. It's hard to get a good look.

• I don't know if I'll end up having the hole in the hood- I very much doubt I'll actually put it up over my head- particularly considering I'd have to thread my wig through the hole to make it look right anyway. Buuut we'll see what I decide when the sewing commences.

The wig is another fun project I'm attacking for the first time- there's a thread in the wig section about it here:
HERE
I'll let you all know when I actually get on the construction part of this- pictures and all that rot.

Yeah the necklace is really something else. I'd had the same sort of approach- the bars are really what concern me- but a lightweight wood would probably be a lot easier than forming all those tiny bars out of paperclay (which is what I intend to make the rest out of- paperclay is ). Great suggestion there ^^

The blue centerpiece is really interesting- here's a screenshot from the PC version- really cleared up in my mind what it should look like:

I orginally thought it was something like a gemstone and was prepared to go hunting for one, but now it looks more like a little engraved piece of blue metal- so i think I'll probably make it a part of the larger metal bit around it and paint it with metallic blue acrylic.

That being said- an abalone cabochon would look really pretty and I think would be a lovely small modification if you have access to it.

The other angle is to show the back of her hair- so that you have a reference :toothy:
Without the PC version of the game to fool around with, reference pics are hard to come by ^^;;
Let me know if you need any others, I will gladly take 'em :toothy:

I hadn't thought of hook and eye closures- that's definitely another option- and maybe even easier than a zipper ^^

• OMG you guys are amazing and I'm so happy that there are more Morrigan cosplayers to give this game more love :D

Wish I could be more help with wigs but frankly my hair is exactly like hers so I don't need one (woo!). From what I can tell, it's a messily done up bun with the ends of her hair sticking out on top since her hair seems to be a bit too long for a proper bun of that size.

And with the hood, Ii'm still not sure it that actually is her hair coming out of that or if it's feathers lik on her shoulder piece, based on how her hair looks here. In this picture, it looks like hair but it doesn't really match her in game hair, or this picture either. She doesn't have THAT much hair sticking out.

For the necklace, I was basing mine more off of this picture, since, I dunno, looks more badass. The blue gemstone seems almost to glow in this image and I really like that effect, personally. I was thinking of a resin gem for a nice shiny, glowy, blue base and then clay on top for details.

• Yeah, the hood is really hard to tell if it's hair or feathers in some shots- nice refs btw ^_^

As for your take on the necklace- makes sense to me, in the concept art it does look much more like a gem- and if that's what you want to make- I say go for it!
I'm still a scaredy cat when it comes to pouring resin, so I'll be sticking with my paperclay I think ^^;; But do show when you get around to making it!

I'm excited that there are so many others cosplaying from this game too!
Now, here's hoping we'll get an armour crafting bad-a** in here to rock Alastair. I'd love to see pictures of someone wearing templar plate.

To be honest, I'm surprised there aren't any Leliana cosplayers so far though- she's totally awesome (her Chantry robes might be a bit of a pain though).

• I would love to see a Leliana cosplayer from the Sacred Ashes video. Her hair is a gorgeous red in that.

I think I would cry a river of joy if I found another Dragon Age character while cosplaying as Morrigan xD

• I'm hoping to find a bad-ass Alistair. My husband has outright refused to indulge me in that regard.

You guys-- AWESOME screencaps, they're so helpful. I like the resin idea for her amulet; I wonder if EL wire would be worthwhile or it's not quite that glowy?

I just like the look in that particular art with the poof at the back of the hood, and to me it looks more like fur or feathers. To that end I'm going to try to hunt down some scraps when I buy the feathers for her shoulder pauldron.

I'm not so much with the screencaps, but if anyone needs help sourcing things, let me know. I've already found some perfect materials for her skirt, etc, online. It's so nice to have other costumers tackling the same project; the input and different ideas is so helpful!

• For her hoodie/top/whatever, I wasn't quite sure as to the best approach for the back. It almost seems like a corset back, but different. It's weird. For a fabric, I was planning on a type of knit since it seems like that might get the right kind of draping (based on shirts I've seen in stores that have a similar neckline and fabric).

And for her bikini top, I really can't figure it out ( I swear when it comes to simple things, I'm lost. Complicated things, sign me up). In every picture with her bikini in it, the stupid artists are like HEY lets make it look like it's taped on triangles >.> As opposed to a normal bikini.

And honestly, I like the look better with the silver bikini top showing. It looks cooler to me, more than this, in-game. Gives her a younger look I think.

But yeah. Just really stumped on that (which makes me feel silly xD). Here's another cool pic for you guys if you haven't seen it.

• I haven't figured out the back of her cowl, either. What it looks most like is those sneakers with the elastic lacings, which is the method I might utilize. That way I don't actually have to add a real closure; it can just slip on and off with an expandable panel behind it. I'm probably going to go with dupioni silk for the top; I use an awful lot of that, because I just really like the way it looks. A knit is probably the best choice, though, because they do have wonderful drape and are also usually easy to care for.

The bikini top reminds me of Yoko from Gurren Lagann; you could probably ask some Yoko cosplayers how they tackled the underboob/sideboob issue. I'm guessing that, quite literally, it IS taped on.

• True enough. I was thinking of doing that. It looks like it fits like a bra, you know? Like, it has the perfect curve without needing to have any gathering and I've seen a few Yoko cosplayers accomplish that with the look of a bikini.

Hopefully the beads won't weigh it down too much. Could be an issue.

•
Like, it has the perfect curve without needing to have any gathering
I don't know how well this will work, but wet-formed leather might be an idea. Tandy Leather has vegi-tan calfskin that's super thin and can be wet-formed, like what they do for armour? No seams or darts ^^

I'm making the "winterized" version of Morrigan and Leliana from the Sacred Ashes video for my friend and I :) I chose that version of Morrigan since my friend doesn't like to show too much skin so the bikini top and plunging neckline is a definite no-no lol I haven't really started planning too much, but I saved all the ref pix people have posted ^^

• Woo, never heard of that stuff before, I'll have to check it out.

I'm totally cosplaying both versions of Morrigan, and YOU ARE AWESOME because we need more Lelianas in the world.

• lol Thank you ^^ I don't know why there aren't more. I wanted to cosplay Leliana the moment I saw her...then when my brother in law told me my 3 year old niece kept calling her by my name when she saw her on the video I was like "yeah. I have to do this one" lol

Oh, and I started making a pair of swords MONTHS ago, turns out the blades looks exactly like Leliana's from Sacred Ashes  So hey, I already started and didn't realize it!
