Add your amusing story! I'm sure a lot of our parents (depending on age) when we first started to now had some pretty interesting reactions to our hobby. I've sent pictures of my stuff to my mom and she's always been like "good job!" or what not, but recently completing Yoko was the first time she ever said something other then that. After sending her the finished picture she texted me back

"Well now, isn't that a bit small? You're not going to a convention alone are you? Is Bejan (my boyfriend) going with you? A male?" I couldn't help but laugh because she's never said anything about prior costumes (Thief Rikku and Vanille). What is it about Yoko that freaks everyone out? Hahaha.

I love when I do get to see my mom though because she adores helping. Regardless of her thinking Yoko is a bit skimpy, she was more then willing to use a drill bit to help me put the scope on =P

Parents just call it a cult..and they're serious. They think we're brainwashed by the little Japanese chibis.

^Wait...you mean we're not? XD

My mom in response to seeing my Gakuko wig, "You're actually going to wear that!? Won't it trail on the ground?"

Well the wig is 150cm and my wig stand is shorter than me so the ponytail actually does reach the floor. On me though it reaches my thighs. My mom still finds that to be shocking.

My Mom didn't like it at first until she saw me making King Mickey for AX 09. I was making the ears the night before the con, my Mom came in; "Those ears are small, make them them bigger."

Then when I was cosplaying as Peter White for PMX 10, I made his clock but I didn't like it how it turn out. When we got to the con I put the clock inside my bag, then these girls wanted my photo and I didn't pose with clock. My Mom saw me and said; "Where's your clock?" Me; "In my bag." Mom; "Take it out when someone ask for your photo next time." Me; "I don't like my clock..." Mom; " Just pose with it next time. I want to see photos of you with your clock. You look adorable holding it." I smiled at my Mom when she said that.:3

I ordered my Hartia and Lin Xiao Li wigs around the same time and Hartia arrived first. This was the conversation I had with my dad:

Dad: "Your wig is here!"
Me: "Is it Hartia or Lin Xiao Li?"
Dad: "How am I supposed to know with it still in the package? heck, I could open it up and have the wig in my hand and I wouldn't know!"
Me: "Well would you really expect someone with a name like Lin Xiao Li to have bright red hair?"
Dad: "Because electric blue and bright white are such natural hair colors!"
Me: "That's different! Kaito is a fairy and Abel is a vampire!"
Dad: "Well how do I know Ching Lau Chang isn't a mystical creature?"
Me: "Did you just string together the 1st 3 chinese sounding syllables you could think of?"
Dad: "...That's not the point."

Mom: "Are those hooker boots?"

In response to my first purchase:
Dad: "... Was shipping expensive?"
Me: "Yep."
Dad: "Are you watching your budget?"
Me: "Yep."
Dad: "Okay."

In response to getting the item (an unnaturally coloured wig):
Mum: "Do NOT wear that Saturday night."
(There was a corporate dinner party that night. She didn't want me giving other senior executives heart attacks.)

Me: I want to buy a skeleton.
Mum: What?
Me: For my Sunako Nakahara cosplay. I just found the perfect song for Sunako, and I want to make a video with it, so I need a skeleton.
Mum: You're not buying a skeleton.
Me: I'll keep it in the closet.
Mum: You need regular clothes in your closet, too, you know, not just costume stuff.
Me: I have regular clothes!
Mum: Yeah, in my closet (partially true).
Me: A skeleton won't take up much room!
Mum: You'll have to keep it in the trunk of your car.
Me: I will!
Mum: No! You can't buy a skeleton!
Me: Fine, I will just get the skull.
Mum: A skull?
Me: His name's John.
Mum:...
My mum is actually quite supportive of my cosplaying, but Sunako is kind of creeping her out...

That reminds me of an experience I had with my dad:

Me: Dad, can I borrow the bone baby? (Bone baby is the halloween yard skeleton that we put in our tree every year.)
Dad: You want to borrow the bone baby, why?
Me: For cosplay
Dad:...Sure
Me: *skipping down hallway* I GET TO BE A CREEPY GERMAN MAN! HUZZAH!
Dad: ...You're so strange.
*later*
Me: *gets in car after my best friend did my cosplay makeup* look at my face!
Dad: *raises eyebrow*
Me: It's for the guy with the skeleton
Dad: Ok then....

Other than that, my parents are reacting surprisingly well to Faust VIII.

Geez, I have a lot of stories...and most of them are about my dad XD

Dad: How's your face? (When my friend was cutting my Hartia wig, she slipped with the scissors and cut me by accident)
Me: I'll live, but Hartia turned out awesome, so it's ok.
Dad: You mean the wig for your Hartia cosplay turned out awesome.
Me: No, I mean Hartia. I do that, refer to the wig by it's character.
Dad:...that's weird.
Me: Actually it's pretty common in the cosplay community.
Dad: Well you're the only one in this house who's a member of the cosplay community, so talk like a normal person.
Me: I can try, but can I still call the imagine blade Leroy?
Dad: Is the character's name Leroy or the sword?
Me: No that character's name is Creed, but I named my sword Leroy.
Dad: That's fine then.

I'm 26 and my Mom still helps me sew my cosplays cuz she's that awesome. I do have to be very careful to clearly mark the hemlines of my skirts because she always wants to make them a bit longer...

Me: -Comes out wearing school girl uniform;
Mom: "Yaritza (RL name), are you wearing shorts underneath that?"
Me: -Sighs: "Yes mom..."
Mom: "Just making sure."

I had another incident recently with my dad when he was giving me money to buy some accessories to my upcoming cosplay.

Dad: -Hands over a little bit of money;
Me: "Thanks Dad, now I can buy my ears!"
Dad: -Just looks at me like....O.o- -Takes back some of the cash;
Me: "But I needed that to buy the other stuff too.."
Dad: -Continues to stare but then smiles, shrugging his shoulders before handing back the money;

I love the look my parents give me when I tell them stuff like that. xD

Let me guess, is it for a Sailor Moon cosplay?XD

I was looking for references of characters that I'll be cosplaying next year.
Mom: What are you doing?
Me: Looking for references of characters that I'll be doing.
*Mom looks at the characters*
Mom: Why do you pick boring costumes...
Me: What?
Mom: Why not pick something exciting. Like this girl did.
*Mom grabs her cell phone and show me a picture of a Penelo cosplayer from AX 11. She was wearing this: http://www.theconcentrium.com/mike/Comm/Penelo/0penelo.jpg *
Me: I'm not that good making something like that.
Mom: Learn by taking a sewing class.
Me: ........
