I think I've decided on my next cosplay costume - a Klingon Targ (a fierce pig-like beast in the Star Trek universe).

It is going to be a 'quad' costume where the performer walks on all fours - with arm stilts used to equalize the length of the arms and legs. You can see the faint outline of my upper body and head in the below drawing to place how it will fit around me.

Since this is a hoofer, my wrist will be about equal to his (her?) front knee, meaning I will be able to do some very natural movements of walking and kneeling - especially since I plan to hinge the hooves so that they 'droop' naturally when the leg is raised.

I've begun on the head by carving it out of styrofoam. The tusks are made from a stiff foam mat and I'll papier mache them when I have the basic shape finished. They're not actually installed in the jaw, I just placed them there for the photos.

I'm not following any specific concept or species, but just carving randomly into something that I like.

I don't know how much or now often I can work on this, but I'll keep updating to this thread when I have something new to show :D

Very neat! I hope to see more of it. =) I don't know much about this stuff, so will the head stay styrofoam or is that just for a mold?

Styrofoam is firm and light, so there's no reason to change it out into something else :P

If I were to be wearing the head over my own (like in a regular fursuit) then I'd use upholstery foam instead. But this head will be worn more like a hat, so styrofoam is the best choice because it holds it own shape and is easy to carve.

I think I love you now. I seriously do. A Targ? Just stay away from the Klingons at Star Trek conventions, they'll want to disembowl you.

it looks great from what I can see! I can't wait to see more!

Yay for targs!

You should totally come to the Star Trek events at Dragon*Con when you finish that! Dragon*Con is the best for costumes like that. ^_^

Awesome! Thanks for the tip :D I *was* wondering where the heck I could go where I might actually be recognized XD

That'll be uber-sweet if you show up at Dragon*Con...I may have to whip out my Starfleet uniform and viciously battle you.

*nods*
Definitely Dragon*Con! they have loads of Star Trek stuff (including a Miss Klingon Empire contest!) and they're open to costumes of all sorts, especially elaborate ones like this! ^_^

(plus, I go to Dragon*Con, so I could totally take photos of you!)

Wow, I don't know what to say besides the obvious fact that it looks fantastic so far! ^^

I can't wait to see more!

Going a slightly different direction. I've decided to use real goat horns as the tusks instead of my fake sculpted ones. They might not look like tusks exactly, but the shape is quite similar to certain species of pig and it's a fantasy creature anyways.

Added a bit of weight to the head, and the mouth will 'bounce' when the head moves (due to the weight of the lower tusks) but I kind of like that. The view into the mouth looks very boar-ish.

I hollowed out the head and gave it light papier mache tuskers. He was just too heavy - plus I like the custom made shape of these ones.

I'll try to work on him a little more regularly XD

This is looking amazing! You have so much talent, you should sell some of it to us lesser talented people! XD
Do you make a living out of this? Because if you don't, any production company or studio would be so grateful to have you as part of their team X___X Please, please, PLEASE keep updating! I can't wait to see this finished.

#15 Beetlecat on 12 years ago

T-ViRus, Thank you :D I do actually make my living off fursuits - though whether it's a successful living is up to interpretation XD But I am doing what I love so it all evens out somehow.

I will keep updating until he is finished! I rather like the idea of a costume journal since, even in just making the head, you can see how often I've backtracked and changed my mind. Often when all a person sees is the final product it seems like the art just appears like that - fully-formed and perfect XD

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to put him away for a little while again while I work on stuff I'm actually getting paid for XD He's be getting better eyes and I'm thinking random spikes on his cheeks and forehead would be a good idea.

If you have any questions of what I've done up to now, don't hesitate to ask ^_^
