CC 25: How was it for you?

This thread is archived.

  • While we're on the subject of thanks, I think I need to single out some folks on the committee that deserve recognition who won't toot their own horns. These 4 ladies all performed multiple functions. And most of those jobs were the less-fun, behind the scenes jobs without the high profile. You should know these people who are part of the community.

First Cathy Swope: Not only was she the Doll Show Co-rodinator, she ran the Green Room and also did some pre-con promotional library displays of costumes to help promote the con and the SLCG

Ramona Taylor not only spent time hustling to find the dealers for CC25, but she worked very hard to co-ordinate the Friday Night Social catering and decorate the ballroom (fortunatley, she had some help). Plus, she did the leg work to track down a good deal on the endless supply of toasted ravioli.

Dana Hinterleitner - Much has been said about cons lacking signage to inform people about events, venues, etc. Not at C25. She went above and beyond the call of duty with her banners, info kiosk and making last minute changes to meeting room signs up to and even while the con was still going on. It really added to the atmosphere that this was a serious, but fun con. We have affectionately nicknamed her "Signage Woman" You probably didn't see much of her because she was either in Ops creating those signs, or she was spelling our Hospitality person (Genie Hillen) some of those late nights. Dana, with her husband, Bruce, also created the outstandingly cool CD plaque awards for our winners.

Finally, there's my wife, Nora Mai. She did the job of at least 5 committee members. As I said at the con, she was the "spine" of the convention committee.

She performed 75-85% of the work on the Future Fashion Folio publication. She mailed them out when they were published last year. She was the Con Treasurer. She was the Membership Co-ordinator. She created and has maintained our incredibly thorough CC25 website. She created and formatted the Virtual Pocket Program and kept it updated every time Pierre and I had to make a panel programming change. She answered e-mails to the site. She reminded me about stuff I kept forgetting to do or needed to do in a timely manner. She mailed out the PRs and the membership packets that contained the FFF to those of you who registered closer to the convention. She made sure things got done when other people on the committee had forgotten or not realized some detail they'd overlooked.

She's the most organized person I've ever met and worked harder than anyone to make the con a great one. She still is - the work's not done yet. Still lots of paperwork and bookkeeping yet to be done.

And in the last year, she's been serving as the ICG's president - a supreme job of cat-herding if there ever was one.

  • While we're thanking people, I want to thank Bruce and Nora and Aurora Celeste for having me come and do panels. Mikhail and I were very honored to be asked.

I want to thank Sandy for rescuing my Snape costume on Friday night.

Most of all, I want to thank Sheila for her advice about masquerade running and how to deal with certain people I've found myself dealing with.

I know I'll get to see all of you St. Louis people at Anime St. Louis, and I hope I see some of the out-of-towners as well. I can't wait for the con next month... no, wait. I can wait. Can't it be a month or so later? AAAAAAHHHHH!

  • OMG Bruce, your wife is awesome. :) Everybody on staff was - for a con this size, the signage, information, cooperation, neatness, detail, coordination, EVERYTHING outdid cons ten or twenty times the size. You guys all deserve kudos.

sarcasm-hime - depends on what kind of crud you caught, because I find myself coming down with a nasty cold today. :) Oops. Oh well! That's what we get for rubbing shoulders.

Thanks. :) I think we met, right? I tried to make an effort to talk to everyone who appeared to be new and /or cosplayers. I think I managed to meet everyone on the CC25 forums who came, save for maybe one.

Of course, I have to sheepishly admit I stuck my foot firmly in my mouth when I was talking to some of the folks from the KU Anime club (Aurora's friends) when I was having a very nice conversation with them. We were talking about conventions, and how (Mike?) was the chairman for Kansas City's Nakkacon(sp?) when I asked enthusiastically, "You guys cosplay too, right? You compete at cons?", not recognizing at the time these guys were part of the Best In Class Trinity Blood entry from the SF & F masquerade. DOH!!!!!!! I just didn't really recognize them, because I had watched the masquerade from the back of the room.

Just to clarify, re-watching the Masque awards our award was Best Recreation: Master Class. The Manticore was Best in Class: Master, with no "Original" designation, so it wasn't best in class, but still got Best in Show for Workmanship, and we were plenty happy with what we got :D Just can't steal someone else's thunder.

That said, I don't think anyone was insulted, from what my friends have said you were the nice guy with the scary ideas (apparently you suggested some scary things on what we need to get going in the KC area) :P Also, at costuming get-together last night we were already enthusiastically coming up with a group entry for NASFIC, so I know at least two people I brought are *hooked* on this thing, and another has decided that Jacqui Ward is her new idol.

Chairman was Brian Smith, convention was Naka-Kon. It's in Feb., you should come

Hmmph. Par for the course. Well, what can you expect when I'm pulling it out of my butt to try to remember...?

Ya mean startin' yer own guild chapter? It only takes 6 people and one or two to do all the work ('cuz that's what ends up happening, in real life)
Also, at costuming get-together last night we were already enthusiastically coming up with a group entry for NASFIC...
Glad to hear it. We'll look for ya. It works that way - on your way back from CC, you get more ideas.

Would love to. The trick will be cost. The theory is Nora and I will be going to Puerto Vallarta next year (as long as it isn't opposite CC26). Also, CC26 will be dicey. If we can't afford to both go, it'll just be Nora going to California.

  • I've uploaded more pictures. The first page of thumbnails is here.

  • I had a great time. I loved the Rock and Roll party on Friday night. It was great fun to wear my hippie outfit and fit right into that fun odd scene. Halfway through the party, when I saw several 18th century outfits I decided to have a bit of fun and ran back to my room and quickly changed into my French Revolution costume. I recieved my first ever costume awards, hall costuming awards- the first for my favorite Miaka costume- the pink one Watase drew for a trading card series. The other was on orange day, and that outfit has a special meaning for me- the orange shirt was the first garment I'd ever sewn for myself, and the black long skirt was my first sucessful attempt at making a tiered skirt. My purple 1860's dress recieved many compliments and several people took pictures of me in it. (It's one of my favorites of my historical costumes too.) I debuted my Tsunade outfit at Costume Con. I also wore my 1966 dress (made in memory of the year I was born) and had some compliments on it as well. My Hippie costume also recieved several compliments. I didn't get a chance to meet any regulars on cosplay com for more than a few minutes, but I met up with someone I know from Dollfie lists several times. :) The parties were nice, the Mousekerade at the end of the con was a lot of fun. I think I had the most fun at this con of any that I've gone to. A big part of that was no costume snobbery, no one whining about "so and so costumes don't belong here, blah, blah, blah" and the large number of costumers over 40, and many plus sized costumers too. The openess to all kinds of costumers was really refreshing. All costumers should have that attitude. It's too bad next years is too far away for me, since I enjoyed myself so throughly at this one. I'll be looking forward to a closer con sometime in the future. :)

Oh and I took lots of pictures! More than I usually take at anime conventions, there were so many fantastic costumes of all sorts!

Thanks! I think you're one of the folks I didn't get a chance to talk to.

There had been complaints of "costume snobbery" in the past from a few (never could find out who - just rumors), but I think that that was more because they themselves weren't making any effort to meet people. I can say with confidence that we, here in St. Louis, were making an extra effort to actually get in people's faces and be friendly to anyone and everyone.

On people over 40 at CC - actually, that's more the rule than the exception. But we're trying to get more younger people to join our community - somebody's gotta carry this hobby on when we're gone, after all.

And many being plus-sized - yeah, well, y'know - when you get to be our age, that kinda happens..... It's funny - we've talked to more than one person who's expressed a little interest in costuming, but they had this weird notion that they had to lose weight or be skinny first. Some of the best costumers I've seen are no skinny sticks.

  • Could someone who actually has the data please post a thread in this forum with the full list of winners of the awards at the Masquerade, please? :) (I would if I had it!)

Oh yeah; and perhaps a title pointing out how VERY well the Trinity Blood entry did would not hurt... ^^ Obviously Anime cosplay has a place at CC, duh, as I've been telling people for ages... :p :) Remember, it's ALL cosplay, no matter what the source material, as far as the Japanese are concerned. ^^

  • Oh, Karisu, I sort of forgot to post this link to our TB gallery, as you asked.

    Omission taken care of.

Working on it. Someone posted the results on the ICG-D list, so we'll make an effort to get it over here soon. Still need to get the Historical results out, too.

  • Thanks for all the reports and stories, guys! I'm sad I didn't get to go, and eagerly await more and more pictures!

I'd like to go to the next one, but it's a bit far away, and who knows what life will throw my way. May be a few years down the road, but I'll attend a CC at some point, I promise! So many of you I want to meet!

  • I'm in the process of getting my photos up. Well, I had half of them up...and then got sick. I'm vertical enough to sit at the computer and edit, so even as I speak I'm finishing the uploading. They're here in my gallery on cosplay.com. If you see you, or a friend, feel free to nab. And correct me on names or costume details if I've labeled them wrong.

Thanks again everyone involved with costumecon. I can't wait until I have the opportunity to make another one - Milwaukee 2010 for sure, don't know about Baltimore yet. It was so great to meet everyone, and poke at costumes, and now that people are posting saying what they were wearing, I can go "Oh yeah! I DID talk to you! Hi!" :D

Individual shots of my costumes (Shuichi Shindou, Lazlo, and Sanzo) are in the respective folders for those costumes. Didn't want to clutter my showoffs with lots of me.

  • Thank you for the pictures, I've left a few comments just for identification for folks.
