Suggestions for epic anime shows/series?

This thread is archived.

• Hi all,

Can anyone recommend some truly epic anime show's/series?

In the recent past my favorites have been those with deep philosophical content, suspense, espionage, some drama, witty humor, and plenty of action (oh and a 3D look is great too).

My favorites so far are the:

AniMatrix shorts
Ghost in the Shell series and sequel series
Madoka Magica

I've also seen:

Cowboy Beebop
Vexille

As well as a few other series and movies. You could say that I gravitate more towards the ones that have something to do with cybernetics and wizardry. So again, I was just wondering if anyone could suggestions some new epic ones.

• I have a few in mind:

Fullmetal Alchemist (Both the original and Brotherhood)
It's probably one of the most anticipated series of all time and is always a favorite to people. (I didn't think so wisely for this anime but I gave it a try and I loved it!)
Tiger & Bunny
A show about heroes. It's mecha but better. I myself is not a fan of mecha but this is one of my favorite mecha series.
Durarara!!
Taking place in Ikebukuro, an anime about gangs. Better then how it sounds like.
Katekyo Hitman REBORN!
The first 20 episodes have extreme humor but it gets serious after episode 20. It's an anime about the mafia.

Awesome!! Thank you very much Noiz Dramatical! I'll look into these right away!

• Well I wont say "Epic" but I do love Ghost Hunt. I don't think many people know about it. But I love it!!!

• Ergo Proxy.
Best Dystopian sci-fi anime in my opinion.
And if you ask me, it's one of the best dystopian sci-fi I've ever seen.

• Seconding Durarara!! and Fullmetal Alchemist. The way they show similar events (in Durarara) from different people's perspective to show you the whole story is really neat. Fullmetal's characterization and battles were equally wonderful. I very much enjoyed those two!

Code Geass also seems like it'd be up your alley. "Set in an alternate future, the series focuses on how the former prince Lelouch Lamperouge obtains a power known as Geass and decides to use it to obliterate the Holy Britannian Empire, an imperial monarchy and a superpower that has been conquering various countries." The Geass power is much more on the fantasy side, but there's a lot of mecha/more sci-fi action as well. The series also has those fun, more light-hearted moments and episodes, but you're constantly caught up in a mental battle about whose actions are 'moral' or 'just'-- some people you want to support do some really horrible things!

• Armitage the Third.

• Gungrave.

Cybernetics - not so much here, but the same idea comes with Necrolyzation. Check.
Deep - Friendships, family, idealism, loyalty and love. Check
Philosophical/Suspense - Redemption? Revenge?
Drama - up the wazoo
Humor - cute infatuation across an age gap and awkward moments that come with it.
Action - bang bang, shoot 'em up. Hence the title.
Espionage - not so much.
Overall Rating: 10/10 Totally.

And then when you're done watching Gungrave watch this amv. But only when you're done because it's spoilery. Enjoy :)

• Ok, wow! So that's Ergo Proxy, Armitage the Third, Gungrave, a link to the AMV ;), and apparently especially Durarara and Fullmetal Alchemist.

Thank you very much Adorima, Thakyuki, Stars, Ricky, and Link for all the recommendations! I'll check into all of these!!

Oh and I actually would have responded sooner, but I'm just now realizing how massive this site is. As I was losing track of some of the threads and posts I had been posting too. lol

• I have been watching Darker Than Black and it is really good. It's a little more of a serious anime.

I also really liked Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It's my favorite anime so far.

Darker than Black was really good !!zz Electric Chinese Batman zz!!! ...until the last ep O_O. And then Season 2 comes along and I don't even know what to say. However, the OVA redeems the series pretty well.

Yes, to all your observations my Liege! I look forward to your reactions! As for me...*goes back to drooling over Brandon Heat*

• Ok, right now I'm on episode six of Tiger & Bunny that Noiz recommended. I have to admit I'm glad I kept watching it past the first few episodes, in those first couple episodes the character's seemed rather shallow. But now six episodes in I see that the character's actually have a lot of heart, some of them just hide it behind their emotionally scarred past.

Not to mention the plot is finally starting to unravel in very mysterious ways. Very cool show, now! :)

• Tiger and Bunny!
I NEVER watch anything other than shoujo(romance, school life etc) but i have to say that Tiger and Bunny is a REALLY good anime. First time i saw it i became obsessed! The whole T&B cast is amazing. I highly recommend it.
There's also Gurren Lagann. Very interesting show.
Code Geass, was my favorite before i started watching T&B.

I haven't seen any of the other series that were recommended, but I have seen a few episodes of these two and I found them both to be very enjoyable. So I'd say give these two a try for sure.

• I'm nearly through the Tiger and Bunny series. The episodes have been a bit frustrating at times, but overall it is rather good!
