XL EVA blade

  • I'm making Undertaker's death scythe (reference here) and the way I have it measured out, the blade will be 45" long. That's much longer than the standard mat, so I'd have to get a roll. I'm afraid just gluing two pieces of EVA foam won't be enough and it will flop around uncontrollably considering it's not attached to the skeleton at many points. How can I make it stronger? Should I just use two pieces of insulation foam board (or whatever it's called)? Thanks in advance!

  • I'd like to ask first what is the full composition of the prop? Also does the blade have to be strictly be made of foam?

Otherwise I'd suggest using a cardboard core with a craft foam overlay.

As for the construction I'd also suggest building the staff and blade first then build the skeleton over it.

  • That's really big. I second the cardboard core. Use two (or more) layers of cardboard and be sure to cut them so the corrugated channels run in opposite directions, this gives it strength.

None of it has been made yet, so it's subject to change. However, the way I have it planned now is that the handle is going to be made of 3/4"-1" PVC lightly coated in clay for the bone-ish details. The tailbone at the bottom is also probably going to be made of clay. The skeleton is going to be either 3D printed or purchased, so either way it's going to be some sort of plastic material.

It doesn't have to be made of foam, that's just what I've been reading that seems to be easiest for people. I'll make a model out of foam and cardboard just to see--thanks guys!

  • If you have a heat gun you're going to need to bend it in a few sections with the curves the staff portion has.
