I'm going as Oracle-verse Impa from Legend of Zelda and she wears a long veil/wimple and the weight of it means that pinning it to my hair isn't enough, but last year when I tried to affix it to my forehead with double sided tape, I ended up with a big square welt. What alternatives can I try?

Pictures? A veil shouldn't weight that much.

I think https://www.zeldadungeon.net/wiki/File:Impa-Art.png is what they're trying to do, not a veil but more of a wimple. But they'll have to tell us to be sure.

For now, ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE PICTURE IS CORRECT: I can see a couple of options. The first one would be to create a wimple of your own, but this one has an elastic circle on the one end. That circle would be fitted to your head, and hold it all in place when you put it on. Think of it as an overly long shower or wig cap or the tube sock from hell. Not that I can readily see how to put it on in the field on your own, but that would be a choice. You could also do the same effect with a set of bobby pins, but again you'd need a helper I think.

Option 2 would be to do nearly the same thing as option 1, except you're making a bit more. You have the top of the wimple, and then you attach it to a small fabric harness with chin straps on clear elastic, or elastic color matched to your hair color. You just put the top on with the harness down, and then tie off/clasp the chin strap, presto.
