I'm seriously considering cosplaying as Mercy in her Halloween skin.
The only thing holding me back is I can't tell what is brown and what is black! I've seen tons of different people cosplaying her, and they all have different takes on what the color of the wings and dress and other props are.
I'm thinking that the hat, wings, and shoulder piece/shrug are black, and the rest is brown. I'm torn about the dress. It looks brown in the game, but then again so does the hat and wings half the time too.
Whats your opinion on it?

Don't look at cosplays, if you want to know what colour something is, always look at original reference material. People get colours wrong all the time, no matter what character or cosplay it is they are doing. Some because they didn't pay attention, some because they have a hard time telling the difference between certain colours, other may not have found the right fabric and the right colour. And keep in mind her wings are meant to be metall, the are going to reflect light differently depending on the lightning.

Thats the problem.
The original material has very moody lighting, and I can't tell what is black and what is brown.

That one is pretty clear. Looks like a lighter/mid brown with a very dark brown for her corset/top, and the wings all black except the orange/yellow bits which looks to be a gradient. I would def use brown not black for the dress, as you said, it looks way more brown than black to me personally

It all just reads as various shades of brown to me, with the wings being the darkest. Even if it's meant to be read as black, using pure black in art at least can actually be detrimental as it'll come out really flat, so dark brown is likely preferable anyway.

Lighting is an issue, but the truest way to get the "official" colors is to just play around with the skin in-game in various stages, so you can see how the lighting is impacting the color. If you don't own the skin a way to do this is just view it in the Hero Gallery, and to cycle the background stage just pop in and out of games/training mode (actually playing the games rather than ditching if that's what you queue for) until you get one with neutral lighting. When I was doing this to get better views of Mei's Jiangshi skin I found the King's Row gallery background was fairly neutral lighting. And don't forget to cross-test the skin with different emotes, victory poses, and highlights to get a fuller view of all the angles and details.

This is all assuming you actually own the game to begin with of course.
