Hatchworth Help!!

  • So, this is a huge and exciting project for me and I want to get it right! Hatchy has a portal in chest, and it looks like they used a fabric that is thick, but thin enough to show the glow from the LEDs under it.

Also, where do I find the buttons on his coat? I hope to get this finished before AX, but my best bet is Sabakon Vegas or Halloween.

  • The fabric doesn't seem thick to me. You could just use any not too thick and densely woven fabric to make the "portal." I think it might just be a satin, and the red ring sewn around it that stabilizes it, possible backed with another thicker fabric for a LED sandwich of a sort to keep everything in the right shape.

  • His buttons aren't shank buttons but a quick search on etsy for "Bolt head buttons" got me these

As far as his "portal" I would personally use Red matte Marine vinyl for the outer rim and then for the Fabric that is diffusing light you can probably use another clear matte vinyl and then an organza or chiffon behind that...or you could try 2 layers of vinyl with the surface of one being painted to help diffuse the light that way....good luck!

  • Could use the uniform fabrics to make it.

  • Here's an example of EL wire under organza that I did for a dress a while back. It's just a single strand of either yellow or blue under 1 layer of yellow organza, and it just lines the sides. That photo was at twilight-- it's not really visible in daylight, but as soon as it starts getting dark the effect is a lot better. (I have a few other photos of that dress in the dark in the same album, if you're curious!) EL wire is easy for electronics beginners because it comes with its own battery pack and you don't have to do anything besides attach the wire, but you can go brighter stacking up regular LEDs if you're willing to do your own circuit design.

It really depends on how you want this glow to work. How bright does it need to be? Should just the edges glow, or the entire thing look even? How opaque or transparent does it need to be?

If you want to go more transparent, organza is definitely an option. If you don't mind it being more opaque, ripstop nylon is an option-- go check out what photographers use for DIY diffusers for more ideas.

If it doesn't need to be fabric, thin sheet plastics are also an option! You can get super thin sheets of acrylic from places like Inventables or TAP Plastics, and if you sand them, the diffusion spreads out nice and evenly.

Yet another option is to consider a mirror-- buy some cheap mirror paper from your local craft store, and purposely fog it up something like spray snow or really, really fine layers of spraypaint.
