"Does a professional photographer belong in the delivery room?"

This article posted today on sfgate.com is an interesting one. While weddings are one special occasion, child-birth is something different. Give it a read and feel free to express your thoughts. Thanks!

Love the shot the used for the article. Is that a 70-200mm I see in the center? From three feet away, and pointed right at... yeah

The photographer is supposed to photograph it; not touch it. lol

I have been asked to do such a photo shoot. I asked "What angle". She said "THE angle". I would have done it, but she did not follow up about it.

I try to keep an open mind when it comes to things like that.....I did video a pig being slaughtered in the Kingdom of Tonga...and that morning, I just had bacon for breakfast....

No problem here. It's a job just like anything else as long as there is a detailed contract and everyone (including the Doctors are okay with it). It only gets creepy if you're (God forbid) sniping shots.

Personally, I wouldn't go out of my way to offer the service and I certainly didn't want any birthing photos of my children (the only recording is in mom and dad's head) and that's enough.

uh... whatever floats their boat. Not sure why a family camera wouldn't be sufficient, but if they want some quality images, I guess hiring someone isn't a bad idea. It's probably a good way to subject their kids to embarrassment with some show-and-tell as they grow up and have friends over to the house.

Would I do it? Probably only for an excessive hourly rate like $200/hr. Might not be a bad idea to bring the weather resistant gear, haha.

Why not? If the couple doesn't mind photos being taken of her nether-yaya...

@Av4rice
Good eye!

Personally I think as long as they keep it safe, it is fine. I don't really find it attractive....nor would I want to see someone else's picture like that.

I can relate to the article.

WHen my wife went into labor with the twins, I was wound pretty tight and my D300 replaced the stereotypical cigarettes and pacing. I'm pleased with the photos I took before, during, and after the birth (but I was forbidden by my wife to take any photos 'down there').
SO I can understand how some couples would want a professional capturing the event.
